Meatball Co. | The Verdict

Approaching The Fox Hotels' newest concept restaurant, Meatball Co., you know exactly what you're in for. A sign proudly proclaiming 'Balls' is front-and-centre, and another sits inside above the open kitchen.

Part industrial-chic, part American diner, this laid back restaurant doesn't seem to take itself too seriously and the tongue-in-cheek menu is both fun and intriguing.

I know what you're thinking. Just meatballs? Well it turns out you can do quite a lot with these small meaty spheres. Sceptics who think you can't run a restaurant based on meatballs alone should come in and marvel at the surprising variety of dishes available.

Yes, meatballs are centre-stage, but the diversity of meats, flavours and sauces will have you coming back again and again.

Beef with smokey tomato sauce or veal and pork with chilli, tomato and roast pepper sauce will keep the carnivores and traditionalists happy. There are also lighter options, with chicken and sweet corn or cod, prawn and scallop with saffron and tomato broth.

Even vegetarians won't go hungry with our personal favourite – green pea, Arborio rice with mint and manchego — that feels more arancini than meatball.

Meatball dishes are $14, which gets you three decent sized orbs of tasty goodness. Sides are $8 and will provide some greenery on your plate (fried broccoli with manchego) or carb you up (potato and garlic puree). 'Rabbit food' is also available, and the menu features a delicious roast beetroot salad with walnut and rocket.

All of this is matched with a top-notch drinks menu offering craft beers on tap, and sweet tooths will enjoy the retro ice-cream sandwiches.

And if you like what you see, why not join the 500 Meatball Club where you can wine, dine and mingle over a meatball? #havingaball
