I've recently taken a trip to Hobart; a city that is full of wonderful second-hand bookstores. Returning home, the weather has been pretty chilly and miserable, and has me longing for a good read. Luckily, Brisbane is blessed with its own array of excellent bookshops. Paddington's Novel Lines is my local second-hand bookstore, located right near the Paddington Antique Centre.
Novel Lines has been in business for years and stocks an array of titles on a wide range of topics—everything from religion to travel. I tend to linger over the vintage fashion and interiors books, but lovers of good fiction, biographies, and other non-fiction tomes will also find plenty to enjoy, including some wonderful out-of-print art books and magazines.
Along with its charming store, Novel Lines also has an online shop where you can browse and purchase items to your heart's content. It's a little idiosyncratic to navigate, but rewards a thorough browse. If you're after something obscure, out-of-print or books on a particular topic, Novel Lines will also hunt down items for you, so give them a call.
While not a large store, Novel Lines always has a lot to see, including plenty of rarities. Even though online shopping makes it easier than ever to purchase books, I still think there is no replacement for the romance of a good bookshop. I suggest heading there on a lazy weekend and taking your time. This end of Paddington has a wealth of great boutiques and antique stores (including Green Tangerine, Hamptons Home Living and Happiness Place) to help you make a day of it. Enjoy!
TUL Note: Nadia Buick co-directs The Fashion Archives, is a freelance fashion curator, and recently submitted a PhD at QUT, so it's no surprise that she knows a thing two when it comes to art and style. Nadia is an avid wearer of vintage (just ask for her best spots about town), collects old paintings and postcards and can always find the beauty in a little clutter.
