Taste of Gasworks Weekend | Your Itinerary

By Sophia McMeekin - 10 Oct 2013

We don't need much of an excuse to celebrate around here (truth be told, we'd go to the opening of an envelope, if there's champers involved), so when we heard it was the iconic Gasometer's 140th birthday party this weekend we thought it was a great excuse to dust off our party wear. Then we heard what they had planned for this massive birthday weekend, and we got really excited (hot tip: it involves birthday cake).

The big weekend kicks off tonight, when Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will officially light the Gasometer with over 1,000 bulbs in a light and sounds extravaganza. (Here's a fun fact: The Gasometer—the circular metal structure, looming large over the new brand-spankin' new Gasworks precinct in Newstead—literally lit the way in Brisbane for over 100 years! Impressive.)

And the festivities continue on Friday night, when live bands take over the Gasometer, with artists including The Vernons performing centre stage inside the Gasometer from 5:30pm.

Saturday is going to be all action stations on the Gasometer's lawns from 11am, as the Taste of Gasworks event kicks off with market stalls, food-tastings, and pop-up bars. Gasworks fab' array of new retailers — think The Standard Market Co., Lorna Jane Active Living Room, Quench smoothies, and more — will have free tasters for you to sample, as you chill out to the sound of live jazz. Highlights from the day include a visit from the always-delicious Bun Mobile, face painting, snow cones, and a jumping castle for the small people, and a burrito challenge at Salsa's Fresh Mexi Grill. Jake from My Kitchen Rules will also be instore at Gurts creating Jake-style desserts out of Gurts delish' frozen yoghurt from 2pm.

Reef Seafood & Sushi will be hosting a pop up bar with Sake demonstrations, sangria and Asahi on offer (as well as serving oysters, prawns, and other seafood delights), while Hatch & Co have a range of boutique beers, ciders, wines, and spirits on offer. Pull up a rug and enjoy the day picnic-style, or have a drink in the licensed area. It's all good! (Find more deets on Saturday's happenings here!)

Live bands will be taking over from 4pm, with local kids Sheppard taking the stage at 7pm. Artists Flinter, Zaped, and Jessiah Cocks will be there supporting. But don't stay out too late, Urban Listers, there's more to come...

The events on Sunday keep going with birthday cake getting cut at 10am, and festivities continuing throughout the day with giveaways and live music from 3:30pm, Sunday is going to go off.
