Everything You Should Get Outdoors And Do This Month

Summer has technically come and gone, but for those of us lucky enough to live in the Sunshine State, we’re blessed with glorious weather year-round. While our southern counterparts have already switched their iced lattes for extra hot flat whites, we’re still hitting the beach every chance we get.

From island hopping to beachside yoga and swimming with horses, we teamed up with Queensland Health to bring you all the outdoor fun you should be ticking off this month. Grab your shades, your bucket hat, and don’t forget the sunblock, because this month is shaping up to be a doozy.

Chase Waterfalls

As captivating as our beaches can be, inland you’ll find lush rainforests sprinkled with waterfalls and swimming holes—and Springbrook National Park is no exception. There's a number of waterfalls and walks for all fitness levels in this area, but our pick goes to the Twin Falls trek. Pack your swimmers and your hiking shoes because you’ll be winding through a stunning four kilometre walk underneath lush rainforest canopy and palm-covered cliffs. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by two gushing waterfalls, and a fresh watering hole for you to sink your body in for a well-deserved swim. This adventure is bucket list-worthy, and snacks and sunblock are mandatory.

Go Island Hopping

We’re lucky to have thousands of world famous islands just off the coast of Queensland, and this is your reminder to make the most of it. Whether you’re game to snorkel with the manta rays at the Tangalooma Shipwrecks or swim in one of Fraser Island’s 40 freshwater lakes, these white-sand isles will give you that exotic overseas feeling minus the jetlag. For a day trip, our pick goes to North Stradbroke Island, a 45-minute ferry from Brisbane. Start your day with a walk along the North Gorge, a man-made boardwalk that will guide you above the cliffs and around the rugged headland. You’ll be treated to panoramic views of the island, perfect for spotting dolphins and dugongs chilling in the water below. Follow the coastline down to Cylinder Beach and spend your afternoon cooling off between the flags. All in all, this island is pure magic.

Scale Cliff Faces

Thrillseekers, this one’s for you. It’s hard to look cool, calm and collected when you’re scaling a cliff but the epic scenery is the perfect distraction. Rock climbing is a top-to-toe workout that will stretch every inch of your body. Check out these challenging Brisbane rock climbing spots, or if you’re a Sunshine Coast local, you should head to Mount Ngungun for multi-pitch climbs accessible to all levels from beginner to vertigo-loving expert.

Beachside Horse Riding

We can’t think of a more magical afternoon than horse riding on a pristine beach with candy-floss skies overhead. Though it may seem like the horse is doing most of the work, this is the perfect way to get some exercise in. Head north to Rainbow Beach or Noosa and go swimming with these majestic animals for a wildly ‘grammable experience you’ll never forget.

Hunt Down Ultra-Cool Threads

With 90s nostalgia having a real moment and retro throw-backs filling our Instagram feeds, don’t miss your chance to score some vintage threads of your own at these Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane markets. Spend your morning exploring stalls and picking out pre-loved designer threads, handcrafted decor and eclectic gifts. Next, take full advantage of the fresh produce on offer and get your hands on some quality fruit and veg so you can cook up a healthy meal at home.

Waterfront Yoga

Imagine listening to waves crash along the shore as you stretch into child’s pose, all while balancing on a paddleboard. When a workout is so fun you forget you’re even exercising, it’s no surprise that SUP yoga is the hottest trend amongst A-listers like Hailey Baldwin and the Jenners right now. If you’re loving the beach vibes but prefer being on solid ground, try beach yoga instead and find your zen with these Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast yogis. Either way, it’s time to unplug from life and let all your worries drift away with the current.  

Dust Off Your Hiking Boots

Make 2019 the year you conquer a mountain. Plus, hiking is a pretty great way to get your sweat on, especially when the physical effort is totally worth the visual reward at the summit. Mount Beerwah is definitely worth lacing up your boots for. Zig zag your way up nearly three kilometres to be greeted with sweeping views of the ocean and Sunshine Coast hinterland. Sleep Underneath The Stars

Make the most of our balmy nights and sleep beneath the stars at one of Queensland’s countless camping grounds. Double Island Point is particularly special for stargazing at night thanks to its remote beach location just three hours north of Brisbane. You’ll fall asleep to the sound of the ocean and wake up to a pretty special view. While your nights are spent stargazing, your days will be spent paddling and chilling out in the green room. Double Island Point is also the perfect spot to pick out a slice of brilliant blue shoreline, throw in a fishing line and enjoy pure tranquillity.
