Winter may seem like the opportune time to sign up to every streaming service under the sun, stock up on bulk Cup-A-Soups, and enter a three-month long state of social hibernation, but trust us, you’d be missing out.

With a million and one events heating up the Gold Coast this winter, there is more than enough going on to justify turning off Netflix, and checking out what’s on down the coast.

For one, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games are less than a year away now and it’s all starting to feel very real (the competition schedule has been released, and you can find out more about ticketing here!).

So, iCals at the ready, here are six events on the Gold Coast you’d be a damn fool to miss this winter.

This list has ‘mini-getaway’ written all over it (any excuse for a holiday, right?)…

If you’re into music—let’s be real, we all are—then you’re going to want to hot foot it to the Gold Coast this winter, because wow, do they have one heck of a live music line up waiting for you!

Blues On Broadbeach Music Festival

Blues On Broadbeach Music Festival is bringing a seriously top-notch music line up to the Gold Coast. ‘80s icon-come-rock-royalty, Bonnie Tyler (Total Eclipse Of The Heart—absolute tune!) will be headlining the festival with Ian Moss (we’re not afraid to say it: he’s Australia’s best guitarist), Slim Jim Phantom Trio, Ray Beadle, Kevin Borich, and Cash Savage and the Last Drinks are joining her, too. The huge festival will be taking over Broadbeach streets and venues over four huuuge days. Come ready for a sing-along, and plenty of good times. The best part? It’s all free!

When: 18-21 May
Where:  Surf Parade, Broadbeach

Broadbeach Country Music Festival

If you can name a better way to experience the Gold Coast than with a free beachside music festival (boasting more than 30 artists, no less), markets, and roving entertainment, we’d be seriously impressed. And that, folks, is just what the Broadbeach Country Music Festival involves. Everyone’s favourite country star, Kasey Chambers will be performing as will Aussie country legend Troy Cassar-Daley. Plus, the band America will be performing their smash-hits, too! Stay tuned as more acts drop!

When: 28-30 July
Where: Surf Parade, Broadbeach

If food is your one true love, the Gold Coast has something for you, too. On top of an array of super-secret coffee spots, Chef’s Table-worthy dining experiences, and bars that are way cooler than us, the Gold Coast has an incredible food scene.

The Gold Coast Food And Wine Festival

If there’s one thing that gets our heart racing, it’s a festival dedicated to life’s two greatest joys; food and wine. That’s exactly what is in store at the Gold Coast Food And Wine Festival in June. The festival is an ode to the Gold Coast’s burgeoning foodie scene and will focus on shared and deliciously unique dining experiences. However, next-level nosh isn’t all that’s on offer here, oh no, there will be performance art, sensory experiences, and musical performances to keep you entertained.

When: 2-4 June
Where: Various locations, check website for details.

If your days are lacking the hard-hitting culture you crave (podcasts just don’t cut it, sorry) then you’re going to want to plan a trip to the Gold Coast quick smart because the coast is about to get a serious injection of culture.

Cooly Rocks On

Cooly Rocks On celebrates the colourful, Rock’n’Roll vibes of the ‘50s and ‘60s set against the achingly beautiful backdrop of Coolangatta. Sounds epic, right? Of course it does! The event brings vintage fashion, vintage cars, and even Rock’n’ Roll, Swing, and Rockabilly Dance championships. There’s even going to be a Poodle Parade which brings us so much joy we don’t even know how to put it into words. The best part? It’s all totally free!

When: 7-11 June
Where: Marine Parade, Coolangatta

Swell Sculpture Festival

The Swell Sculpture Festival will overtake Currumbin Beach for ten days this winter with over 50 incredible works from local, national, and international artists. This game-changing outdoor gallery is made for blissful beachside strolls through the sculptures while soaking up the natural beauty of the Gold Coast. The festival will feature artist talks, guided tours, artist masterclasses, and even children’s workshops. As well as all the stunning artworks to take in, we’re also in for performance art, yoga, music, and a whole host of culinary delights. To say we’re excited is probably the understatement of the century.

When: 8 – 17 September
Where: Pacific Parade, Currumbin

Winter is the ideal time of year for sports, that’s a fact. When the weather cools down, the sporting fields heat up, and the Gold Coast is more than testament to that.

Gold Coast Titans Vs. New Zealand Warriors

If there’s a rivalry that beats firm in our minds and hearts, it’s got to be Australia versus New Zealand. There’s the whole pavlova debacle (for one), Russell Crowe, and the fact that our flags look kind of similar but, the biggest rivalry of them all is obviously the rugby league. So you really don’t want to miss this one. Plus, not only is it one of the world’s biggest sporting clashes, Konrad Hurrell will be playing against his old team. Really, it’s going to be a big one!

When: 10 June
Where: Cbus Super Stadium, Robina
