Well West End seems to be getting all the good new stuff at the moment.
And one new West End place I’ve been waiting for with baited breath is Cake & Bake: baker extraordinaire Jocelyn Hancock’s brand spanking new cake shop.
Cake & Bake features all the traditional style cakes, tarts and quiches we’ve come to expect from Jocelyn, but with the added bonus of pretty, seasonal produce sourced from around her Killarney farm. We’re talking the likes of tart Meyer lemons, juicy mulberries, sweet raspberries and plump apricots.
Due to my excitement, I drag my boyfriend up early to get in first to Cake & Bake, which is hidden just off West End’s Montague Road. His bleary eyes appear to brighten as soon as he smells the mountain of fresh, buttery croissants on the counter (and let’s be honest, as soon as he has a strong long black in hand).
Being early in the morning, Cake & Bake's team of bakers are all bustling about happily and, as we sit at the little table inside drinking our coffees, we survey the day’s delights being pulled straight from the oven. There are so many compelling options we’ll obviously need to sample a selection: we choose a creamy quiche Lorraine, a brownie with a swirl of halva, and a little mulberry tart with a raspberry on top.
The handmade pastry of the quiche Lorraine crumbles to perfection, the halva in the brownie takes the edge of the sweetness and adds great texture, while the little mulberry custard tart is so delicious we both fight to get our full ‘half’, right down to the raspberry. Suffice to say we were very happy campers, teeming with a satisfaction that you can only get from good coffee, warm baked goods and a friendly atmosphere in the morning.
