1st Jan 2019

It’s officially 2019 and if this lineup of things to do on the Gold Coast is anything to go by, it’s going to be a big one.

To celebrate summer, new beginnings and our love of running amuck, here’s all the best things to do on the Gold Coast this January.

Burleigh Heads Boardriders Single Fin Festival

For the 22nd year running, The Burleigh Heads Boardriders Club are putting on their Single Fin Festival. It takes a true legend to compete on a retro board and all sleds will be made pre-1985. Following in the footsteps of past competitors such as Parko and Mick Fanning, we dare say there will be some celebs onsite. Stash a couple of roadies, roll out the picnic blanket and get your shakkas ready at Burleigh Point.

When: Friday 4 January—Sunday 6 January; 4pm onwards
Where: Burleigh Point; Burleigh Heads
Cost: Free

Pete Murray Live at NightQuarter

Someone telling you you’re ‘so beautiful’ is pretty special and when it’s Aussie legend Pete Murray serenading from stage, it’s even better. As part of his PM3 tour, and after sold out shows across the nation, the crooner is keeping this one low-key. Playing to an intimate audience at NightQuarter (https://www.theurbanlist.com/goldcoast/directory/nightquarter-helensvale) throwing in some new tunes and chortling all of your old faves this one shouldn’t be missed.

When: Saturday 6 January; 4pm to 10pm
Where: NightQuarter; 1 Town Centre Drive, Helensvale
Cost: $49.50

The Beautiful Girls at Kingscliff Hotel

Weekend road trips are a summertime essential and heading south with a bunch of mates is on most to-do lists this January. But if you’re still feeling the effects of New Year’s Eve, we’ve got just the thing to ease you back to reality. Having just finished a month-long European tour, The Beautiful Girls will visit the Kingscliff Hotel just five days into 2019. Notorious for chilled out tunes, heartfelt lyrics and dreamy melodies, sinking a couple in the sun could be just what the doctor ordered.

When: Saturday 5 January; 7 to 10pm
Where: Kingscliff Hotel; 102 Marine Parade, Kingscliff
Cost: $45.85

Gold Coast Food and Wine Festival

Just when we thought it was time to start working off our Christmas food babies, the Food and Wine Expo sets up shop at the Convention Centre. But we’re not complaining one bit. Past contestants from Masterchef and My Kitchen Rules will take to the stage for live cooking demonstrations. There’s also a free wine, beer and cheese Appreciation Area held daily, brimming with wine connoisseurs who know a good drop.

When: Friday 11 January—Sunday 13 January; 11am to 5pm
Where: Broadbeach Convention Centre; 12-14 Albert Avenue, Broadbeach
Cost: $6—$50

Whether you’re a XXXX, Moet, Canadian Club or Sirromet wine lover, 2019’s race day has you covered.

When you’re looking for a lover with an equally disturbing sense of humour, then Speed Dating Against Humanity is your go-to. So far Mo’s hilarious night of totally not PC antics has match-made four couples. They’re pretty good odds, since only one event has been hosted so far. For sure one of the most unique things to do on the Gold Coast this January and it’s even BYO. Gold Coaster tested. Urban List approved.

Summer Ice Cream Festival

If our favourite thing to do in summer is cure a hangover with a swim in the ocean, our second is ice cream double scoops. But this January’s Summer Ice Cream Festival at NightQuarter doesn’t just have your average cone or cup options. They’re scooping creamy goodness into donuts, honey puffs and cocktails too. What about a side of ice cream with your fries or a special sweet treat for your pooch?

Where: NightQuarter, 1 Town Centre Drive, Helensvale
Cost: $3 entry at the door, kids 12 and under free

Drag Brunch Club at The Island

Start spreading the news, The Island’s hosting a Broadway edition of the Drag Brunch Club after their last event’s huge success. Strut on down for three jam-packed hours featuring outrageous entertainment, spilling brunch platters and a cold one on arrival. Kicking off on the brand spanking new Pool Deck, splash into the new year with sass, darling.

Australia Day at Broadwater Parklands

Get into the spirit of Australian Day by catching the G Link down to Broadwater Parklands for an afternoon of purely Aussie celebrations. The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre is right next door for a cool down which is handy. And there’s a whole lot of food trucks cooking up a storm in the arvo right up until a night of firework magic.

Graze on the Green

The northern end’s hidden gem, Links Hope Island is usually reserved for swanky weddings, OTT soirees and serious golfing. So, here’s your chance to have a peek inside during Graze on the Green. Teaming with The Design Collective, the day is set to take picnicking next level. Because, of course, sprawling tee off greens make for the perfect outdoor day of snacking. Featuring swoon-inducing entertainment, mouthwatering eats and a selection of beer and wine, this is hands down one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast this January. BYO picnic blanket, pals and appetite.
