Zeppelin Barbers’ Jase Alpen Dishes Up His Fave Spots To Eat

Jase Alpen not only rocks the most luscious mane in town, he’s also the proud owner of one of the most respected Gold Coast barbershops. Based in the Mermaid Beach nook neighbouring Lupo and Glenelg Public House, Zeppelin.B is seriously cool and has earned itself a dedicated following of loyal clients—who return again and again for friendly banter and fashion style cuts. 

Having worked in the industry for 10 years, Jase opened his own salon three years ago and then, when demand far exceeded his original man cave, moved to a larger, contemporary shop in Mermaid Beach. This humble guy will be the last to tell you he was a top five finalist at the 2019 Australian Hair Industry Awards for Australian Barber of the Year. Or, that he was a men’s hair stylist backstage at Splendour in the Grass, where he had the opportunity to cut and style artists from some of his favourite bands like Foals, Pond and Wolfmother. 

We caught up with Jase to find out where and what he’s eating in between haircuts and running one of the most loved barber salons in town. 

How do you start your morning?

I start the morning by walking my dog, aka Sir Ralph Lauren, followed by some tunes and a little boogie to get the blood flowing! 

Breakfast O’clock?

What I’ve got on for the morning will determine where I go for breakfast. I’m normally running late because I can’t decide on an outfit, or I’m hungover, or chilling with my lady. If I’m on the run, I’ll get a coffee from Frankie Espresso, a cheeky croissant at Burleigh Co Op or stop at The Henchman on my way to work. If I’m hungover and treating myself, it’s always Elk Espresso for extra bacon. And, if I have nothing but time, I’ll head over to Pearl and Ash for a couple of coffees and, of course, bacon! 

It’s lunchtime, where are you heading and what are you ordering?

Well, as you probably already know, hairstylists don’t have lunch! On a Saturday after work, the boys and myself like to finish up at Glenelg Public House for a wagyu burger and a couple of beers in the beer garden. While on days off, I’ll go straight to Harry’s Sports Bar for a steak, beers and some sport.

The dreaded 3pm dip. What’s the snack plan?

I’ll duck around the corner to Board Culture for some banana bread and another coffee. 

After work drinks—who’s making and what are you having?

As soon as I pack down the salon, I head straight next door to Lupo for an Umeshu Soda, served up by the man himself—Randy. Otherwise, you might often find me at Après Surf.

Where do you hit for a mid-week dinner?

I can never go past my favourite, Lupo. Thea, aka the Greek Goddess, looks after me like no other. Bradley Cooper and Harry are always cooking up fresh new flavours... their bruschetta is like a drug, and the pasta to die for. 

Or, a special occasion? 

I can’t go past Rick Shores; the view is amazing and, being a Burleigh local, it’s a must. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, both my lady and myself have celebrated our 30th birthdays at Lupo—it is a very special place for us!
