Where To Celebrate Lunar New Year In Sydney

By Phoebe McRae
9th Feb 2018

Prepare to unbuckle your belts and make way for all things delicious because Lunar New Year is almost here. It’s one of our absolute fave times of the year—there ain’t no party like a Lunar New Year party—and luckily for you, we’ve hunted down the best festivities in town. If you want to guarantee yourself some luck, good fortune or, at the very least, a complete food coma, the only place to be is The Galeries.

From 15 to 28 February, your fave CBD complex will transform into party town, complete with lucky laneways (featuring art by locals Alex Lehours, Nastia Gladushchenko, McDermott Baxter and Leona Fietz) and live music by Milan Ring. To kick things off, funny man Matt Okine will host the inaugural Lunar New Year Taste Tournament on 15 February, where you can expect to see Grill’d, Lotus, Chat Thai and Jimmy’s Recipe battle it out to take on the flavour of Good Fortune. The best part? You get to taste their creations. Find it on the Galeries ground floor from 11:30am. BYO stretchy pants.

There’ll be a HUGE ramen-eating competition hosted by Ichiban Boshi and SBS Pop Asia, plus an Instagram filter workshop (!!) run by Andy Trieu and DIY lunar lanterns at Books Kinokuniya. Whatever you do, make sure you don’t go home without stopping by The Kusuka Pop Up so you can score yourself one of their unconventional fortune cookies (when you spend 25 bucks or more). Get all the deets here.
