At Urban List, we’re all about living your best life, wherever that might be. And because it’s important we do our part to flatten the COVID-19 curve by physical distancing, we’re here to help you embrace your best life at home too.

While bar-hopping and gig-going might be cancelled for the foreseeable future, it doesn't mean you need to suffer through cocktail-less evenings. In fact, it’s time to officially master the art of mixology from the comfort of your own couch. So together with Maker’s Mark, we’re tackling variations of an old favourite—quite literally. Having been around since the early 1800s, the Old Fashioned is undeniably iconic. We’re bringing you the details on how to master this tried and tested tipple, plus a few 2020 twists to experiment with at home. From cold brew to smoking rosemary, it’s time to get your shakers ready, team.

Classic Old Fashioned

Before you graduate to the more creative variations of this whisky classic, nail the OG. Sweet, strong and sippable, the Classic Old Fashioned is sure to impress your virtual crew at your next online happy hour.

INGREDIENTS

– 1 sugar cube
– 3 dashes Angostura bitters
– Ice
– 70ml of Maker’s Mark

METHOD

Add the sugar to your glass, sprinkle with bitters and a few drops of water before adding the whisky and stirring to dissolve. Add ice cubes, stir, and garnish with a slice of orange. It’s literally that simple.

TIP

Running low on the sweet stuff? Swap the sugar cube out for a teaspoon of pantry staples like maple syrup or honey.

Coffee Old Fashioned

For those moments when you can’t choose between a hit of caffeine or liquid courage, turn to this aromatic twist on a cocktail classic. Starring coffee, whisky and chocolate, it’s basically all the good stuff in one hit.

INGREDIENTS

– 45ml of your favourite cold brew
– 70ml of Maker’s Mark
– 1 tbsp crème de cacao
– 1 tbsp simple syrup
– 3 dashes orange bitters
– Ice
– Garnish with grated chocolate or fresh coffee beans

METHOD

Grab your shaker and ingredients because this is a one-shake-wonder. Fill your shaker with ice cubes, pour all ingredients over, crank up the beats and get your shake on. Strain into an Old Fashioned-style glass filled with fresh ice and garnish with grated chocolate or coffee beans.

TIP

Don’t have a cocktail shaker lying around? A mason jar, protein shaker or blender cup will do the trick—just make sure to strain your drink properly when pouring it into the glass.

Smoking Old Fashioned

Because virtual parties are officially the next big thing, bring a little drama to the screen and host a cocktail making session with your mates using this show-stopping recipe.

INGREDIENTS

– 60ml of Maker’s Mark
– 1 tbsp simple syrup or 1 sugar cube
– 3 dashes Angostura bitters
– Ice
– 1 orange peel
– 2 pieces of dried rosemary

METHOD

Get set with an Old Fashioned-style glass filled with ice, Maker’s Mark, simple syrup and bitters. Squeeze the orange peel over the glass and place it into the drink. Now for the drama—light a sprig of rosemary and place it over the glass (but not in it). Cover the spring with a cocktail shaker and watch as the fire goes out, allowing the drink to infuse with smoke for about 10 seconds or so. Get your ‘Gram ready, remove the shaker with a flourish and garnish with fresh rosemary.

TIP

Ditch the pre-packaged herbs and grow yours from scratch—that way you’ll always have some on hand. Should oranges and rosemary be hard to come by, you can swap this combo out for grapefruit and sage.

Apple Pie Old Fashioned

Ease any COVID-19 anxiety with what is essentially an apple pie in a glass—this take on an Old Fashioned is the pure definition of a comfort drink, best enjoyed cosied up on a virtual movie night with mates.

INGREDIENTS

– 30ml of Maker’s Mark
– 30ml of applejack
– 25ml spiced apple syrup
– 2 dashes Angostura bitters
– Ice
– Garnish with a cinnamon stick and thinly sliced apples

METHOD

Prep your special apple syrup by combining a dash of apple cider, nutmeg, cinnamon and star anise with some brown sugar. Add all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir to your heart’s content. Strain over ice into an Old Fashioned-style glass and garnish with thinly sliced green apple and a cinnamon stick for the wow-factor.

TIP

Can’t get your hands on a bottle of applejack? Never fear. Swap it out for a splash of cognac or brandy to achieve a similar taste sensation.

Ready to rock that self-isolation cocktail game? Prep yourself for these twisted takes on an Old Fashioned by grabbing a bottle of Maker’s Mark online or from your local bottle shop.
