2015 was pretty much the year of the donut.

Who could have predicted how long we’ve been willing to line up, how much we’ve been prepared to shell out and how many #foodporn pictures we’ve published this year in the name of the humble donut? But like addicts, we kept going back to feed our cravings for the weird and wonderful creations (albeit with syringes full of caramel or nutella). But, after the initial sugar rush, is everyone starting to wonder if it’s time to detox?

Never fear, donut junkies! At Nodo Donuts, pronounced “no-dough” for a reason, you can feel almost virtuous because you won’t encounter any gluten and their classic product is baked, not fried. They also don’t use any artificial flavours or colouring, and source their ingredients locally and responsibly. No wonder they claim to produce “the world’s friendliest donut”.

You may have come across Nodo at one of their market stalls, where they developed a cult following. Now they have opened their first store (tastefully fitted out, obvi) on the corner of Chester and Ella Streets in Newstead.

Nodo’s philosophy is “eat donuts for breakfast”. Say no more! After a Saturday morning sleep-in, I headed in for a weekend treat. I pretty much wanted one of everything on display, but settled on a blueberry ricotta donut with lemon cheesecake icing and a pistachio crumb. After much deliberation, my significant other chose a raspberry and coconut donut topped with couverture white chocolate, vanilla bean and freeze dried raspberry.

After reading those descriptions, do I really need to tell you how they tasted? Heavenly! The texture was much lighter than I was used to and the flavouring was subtle, but undeniably delicious. I restrained myself from ordering another donut, but I’ll be back soon to try out their banana and greek yoghurt, pumpkin maple and passionfruit varieties.

Being Saturday morning, the perfect partner for the donut was a double shot coffee made with care by the barista on duty. But if I wasn't hungover I would have selected their ‘Supernatural Shakes’ with intriguing names like the Magic Mushroom, Life by Chocolate and Liquid Gold.

It was pretty awesome coming across Nodo Donuts at markets around town, but we're pretty damn excited that they've settled into their first permanent store and are here to stay!
