Sometimes your face needs a little bit of TLC. And while we would love to visit a beauty salon on the reg, unfortunately we’re often thwarted due to lack of cash or time. Thankfully, there is a more convenient and thrifty saviour. And that, my friends, is the sheet mask—the perfect accompaniment to your Netflix binge sessions.

What exactly are sheet masks?

These are not just a soft (somewhat wet) blanket for your face. Sheet masks are single-use cloths loaded with goodies for your skin. According to Mecca’s skincare specialist Fiona Giovenco, “the greatest advantage that sheet masks have are their ability to deliver concentrated actives deep into the skin.” They come pre-packaged, making them super convenient to travel with and can be used once or twice per week (which make them a perfect excuse to whack one on your face and chill for 10 to 15 minutes).

How do they work?

Giovenco recommends when choosing a sheet mask, look for powerful ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to moisturise, collagen to lift and firm, and caffeine to de-puff. Other beneficial ingredients to look out for include Vitamin A, C, E and B3 niacinamide to increase levels of fatty acid in skin, which prevents it from losing moisture. If minimising fine lines and wrinkles is your jam, pick ingredients such as peptides, or antioxidants like green tea, tomatoes and sea kelp.

How do I use them?

For the best results, cleanse, tone and exfoliate your face prior to application (this maximises your skin’s ability to absorb ingredients). Unfold the mask, place it onto your face and remove any excess packaging such as backing paper. Let the mask do its thing and try to forget that you look like Zachary Quinto à la American Horror Story: Asylum. Also, they tend to drip so keep a towel nearby.

Leave the mask on for about 10 - 20 minutes, or as directed on the packaging. After removing the mask just rub excess into your skin and voila! Check out your softer, smoother, hydrated, and radiant skin.

Sheet yeah, sign me up!
