Can you hear that? Can you feel that? It’s the sweet sounds of summer rolling into our lives and bringing three months of sand, sun, salt and fun times galore. And you know what that means… It’s time to get out of the house, off the couch, and into the silly season… The time when good food, good drinks and good times are a given. Think of the refreshing beers (a la the new Hahn Radler), the BBQs, the picnics, the after work drinks. That’s right, it’s time to put away your mac and cheese and dive into all of those refreshing foods you’ve been ignoring at the supermarket all year.

Sure, it’s still a month or so off, but in the meantime, we’ve worked out the most refreshing foods you can get your hands on in the lead up to the warmer months, and given you the perfect situation to enjoy them.

So what are you waiting for?

#1 Oyster Shooters | The Girls Night

Oysters can be an acquired taste… Enter oyster shooters, where a sexy, classy delicacy meets a thumping good time. Don’t knock this one until you try it, guys. You’ll be a convert before you know it. Hint: try it with a bit of Bloody Mary mix and a generous squeeze of lemon. Mind blown.

#2 Watermelon & Feta Salad | The Park Picnic

Living on watermelon in the summer is mandatory, duh. You keep one of those sweet, colourful bad boys in the fridge and you’re pretty much set. I don’t want to mess with your routine, but have you ever added in some creamy, salty feta? This is one refreshing salad that will have you converted for summers to come. Thank me later.

#3 Beers With Lemon | The After Work Drinks

ICYMI, it’s getting hotter and afternoon drinks are mandatory, ya hear? Send that memo around the office, stat. And a squeeze of lemon in your bevvy is the perfect way to take it from enjoyable to downright delicious. Don’t worry about doing it yourself and getting messy, just grab a Hahn Radler and get ready to enjoy. It’s a light, European-style beer cut with 30% natural lemon flavour, and it’s damn refreshing… Even if you’re not usually a beer drinker.

#4 Lettuce Leaf Tacos | The Long Lunch

Right, who was the genius that came up with this one, huh? All the delicious taco filling and none of the filling carb? That’s the kind of thing that will win you a Nobel Prize one day. Plus, less carby taco means more cheesy, guacy, saucy filling, obviously. You heard it here first, peeps.

#5 Avocado & Mango Salad | The Family Reunion

If you don’t love avocado so much you’ve considered getting it tattooed on your body, there’s probably something wrong with you. Kidding, but seriously. Some genius decided to pair up avocado and mango in some sort of delicious Australian hybrid, and they made an excellent choice by doing so.

#6 Tequila-Cured Gravlax | The Work Christmas Party

I swear all of these are just ways to sneak booze into your everyday foods. Either way, tequila-cured gravlax is an epic opportunity to get your dose of Omega-3 AND bring everyone together over some mouth-watering summery food at the office Christmas party this year.

#7 Beer Can Chicken | The Backyard BBQ

I’m not sure what the first person that stuck a tinnie in a chicken’s bum was thinking, but I’m happy they did it because there is nothing better than a crispy-skinned BBQ chicken with a steamy, juicy inside. It’s an excellent conversation starter, too, so don’t be afraid to bring your mates together and give it a go.

#8 Banana ‘Ice Cream’ | The Romantic Night In

This one’s for the health nuts out there… Or just the people that enjoy things that taste good. Simply throw some frozen bananas in your blender until they’re the consistency of ice cream, spoon into a bowl and share with bae. It’s a refreshing take on those desserts you love so much.

Now, go celebrate summer!
