Smooth Operator | Our Favourite Smoothie Recipes

By Anna May - 04 Sep 2014

Walking down the street with a liquid meal in hand has become something of a fashion statement in recent times, and all of us at The Urban List are no exception to this smoothie craze. Plus, taking in the liquid goodness is even more enjoyable when it's somewhat healthy.

So, whether you like yours fruity, green, protein-packed or just like to think your milkshake is nutritious, here are a few of our favourite smoothie recipes, just for you!

Paleo-Friendly Carrot Cake Smoothie

We understand, Paleo enthusiasts, life without the joy of flour, sugar and dairy-filled cake can be difficult. If you're anything like us, carrot cake and its mix of spices is always a winner – plus, you can pretend it's healthy. Fortunately in this case, the Paleo-Friendly Carrot Cake Smoothie by Alison Sims of Paleo Foodies is healthy and will satisfy any sweet tooth. Yum!

Serves 1

Ingredients

1 cup almond milk

1 small carrot, chopped roughly

1/4 cup Greek or natural yoghurt (substitute with coconut yoghurt or coconut cream for dairy free)

1/2 banana

2 tablespoons chia seeds

1 teaspoon maca powder

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg powder

Topping

Grated carrot

Walnuts

Method

Blend until smooth. Pour into a glass. Add toppings and drink.

Choc-Raspberry Protein Smoothie

This one's a little something from us to you, Urban Listers. Smooth, chilled and delicious, this choc-raspberry protein smoothie tastes sinful (it's not), will keep any hunger pangs away, and help you steer clear of the snack drawer (we can't promise the latter).

Serves 1

Ingredients

1 cup almond and coconut milk

1 scoop chocolate protein powder

½ cup frozen or fresh raspberries

½ teaspoon raw cacao powder

1 tablespoon chia seeds

Method

Blend until smooth, pour into glass, enjoy, pick seeds out of teeth.

Avocado, Mango Smoothie

Don't be deterred by the avocado in this liquid meal, its buttery texture blends perfectly with the zesty mango and makes for a silky smooth drinking experience. Plus, Victoria's Secret Angels swear by drinking this green goodness for extra shiny hair.

Serves 1

Ingredients

¼ ripe avocado, peeled

½ cup frozen or fresh mango

½ cup coconut water

¼ cup fresh water

Freshly picked mint

Method

Blend until smooth. This one is best enjoyed extra thick!

Banoffee Pie Smoothie

The dessert gods did us a favour when they whispered the recipe for Banoffee Pie in the ears of its earthly creator. Sadly for us, the use of healthy bananas does not cancel out the cream, caramel and flaky pastry in the dessert. Fear not Urban Listers, all is not lost. We've come up with an alternative for you to enjoy.

Serves 1

Ingredients

1 banana (freeze it beforehand if you like your smoothies thick)

6 medjool dates, pitted

1 cup almond milk

1 digestive biscuit (optional)

½ teaspoon vanilla essence

Method

Blend banana, dates, milk and vanilla essence until smooth. Crumble digestive biscuit on top if that's your style, and enjoy.

Cool As A Cucumber Green Smoothie

Impatiently waiting for summer? We feel your pain. Not only is the green smoothie something of a fashion statement, it's surprisingly delicious, wonderfully refreshing, and definitely a winner in the lead-up to summer. There are a million and one things you could use in this recipe – try it out with watermelon or apple. Hint: for a thicker result, freeze ingredients beforehand.

Serves 1

Ingredients

1 cup coconut water

½ cup frozen or fresh mango

½ cup frozen pineapple

½ cup fresh cucumber

½ cup baby spinach

Freshly picked mint

½ a lemon

½ cup ice

Method

Blend all ingredients together until desired thickness is achieved, drink through a straw – just because it's fun.

Oaty Breakfast Smoothie

Your head says eat breakfast, your heart says stay warm in bed. We're all too familiar with the eternal struggle between sleep, sustenance and being on time. Fortunately, this goodie-packed oaty breakfast smoothie is easy to make, shake and take on the road. Now, where's the snooze button?

Serves 1

Ingredients

1 cup milk of your choice

½ cup oats

½ banana

¼ cup strawberries

1 small handful of almonds

1 teaspoon honey

Pinch cinnamon

Method

Blend well – this one is jam-packed with goodies so make sure it liquefies properly – then enjoy, knowing you beat the alarm clock at its own game.
