The 21st century workplace is an interesting beast.
Working-from-home offices, shared space offices, hot-desking, and industrial spaces-cum-offices; with so many different ways of working, it's hard to know how to make the most of a workspace to get things done like a boss.
Making your workspace one that you want to be in is just as important for productivity as things like Internet access, or ergonomics. Just because you have to be at work doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy it, too!
All our previous attempts at desk feng shui have lead to some pretty fugly—and uncomfortable—arrangements so we thought it high time we got some help.
Forget the half-dead succulents and ramshackle desk décor (old coffee cups count as desk accessories, right?), because our friends behind Brisbane's coolest boutique, serviced offices spaces, Buzz Offices (with locations in Red Hill, Paddington and Spring Hill), have given us their expert tips for pimping your workspace to maximise productivity — and love where you work.
DESIGN IN MIND
Lay out your office furniture in a way that maximises productivity but will also allow room for a chill out zone that gives you time out from your computer. This could be a nice couch for brainstorming, or, if you're really cool, even a ping pong table!
Make your mark on and around your desk with personal touches like photos from your favourite holiday and bright, colourful artwork. This helps add a sense of ownership and homeliness.
NEAT AS A PIN
Incorporate a pin board or inspiration board above your desk to organise chaotic clippings, create a point of interest, and inspire creativity. (This is also where you should stick those inspiration quotes you've been liking on Insta'.)
Dying succulents aside, recent studies have shown that office plants can make workers up to 15% more productive, so grab a cute little plant (or on-trend cactus), and turn your desk green. You can find some cute-as-a-button desk plants at Urban List faves, The Small Garden, Gasworks Flowers, and Showroom.
Saturate your work space with as much natural light as possible because it makes for happier, healthier and more productive desk dwelling (it'll also keep the new green additions perky!). Opening the blinds also saves on electricity. Bonus!
It's been the subject of many an office conflict but the temperature of a workspace is a pretty big deal when it comes getting things done. Comfort is key; being too hot or cold will have you distracted and thinking about how to get warmer or cooler, and not that all-important presentation you should be finishing.
