Australia Day events on the Gold Coast

Mid-summer long weekend? Don’t mind if we do! Celebrate life in the best country on Earth with a host of organised festivities and raucous backyard parties on the Gold Coast this Australia Day long weekend.

With Triple J ceremoniously moved to Saturday 27 January this year, we’re witnessing the celebrations spread across the entire weekend, so you better converse your energy! Bust out the blow-up pool and Havaiana thong floaties, dust off the portable BBQ and beach cricket set, round up your mates and warm up your lungs for one of the best holidays of the year.

If you don’t already have a friend-filled backyard barbie on the agenda, head for our pick of the best Australia Day parties on the Gold Coast. #Straya!

All Weekend Long

Flight Centre 2018 Burleigh Pro

Kicking off on Thursday 25 and running right through ‘til Sunday, this World Surf League sanctioned men’s and women’s event will see some of the best surfers on the planet, along with many talented locals, descend on Burleigh’s much-loved right hand point break. Burleigh Hill will be one of the best seats in the house from which to catch all the festival high jinks and wave-slashing action of the Burleigh Pro, which is a warm-up event for the Quiky Pro returning to Snapper Rocks in March. If you’re looking to party on afterwards, Burleigh Heads Beach Hotel is claiming dibs as the official after party venue with specials, live music and DJs from 5pm nightly.

Three-Day Australia Day Fest At Komune

So this one’s a sure-fire bender. Coolangatta’s Komune Beach Club wants you to commit for the long haul with the Australia Day festivities starting Friday afternoon and rolling right on through ‘til Sunday. If you are too responsible (and one hangover a month is more than enough), hold out for the real deal on January 27, with a splashable pool party, volleyball comp, sausage sizzle and games, all set to the backdrop of jumping local DJs. Doors open at 3pm daily. ‘Straya!

OzFest Block Party At Miami Tavern

Keeping patriotic locals in the spirit well into the weekend (Saturday 27 and Sunday 28), Gold Coast’s very own pop-up music festival returns to the Miami Tavern for its fifth instalment. Ozfest Block Party promises to be bigger and better with live performances from Polish Club, Cosmic Psychos, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and more, with Sydney collective One Day promising an electric block party on the rooftop car park. Tickets on sale now via the website. Helloooo summer!

Burleigh Hill Hangs

We’ll give you one guess where to find half of the Coast’s 20 and 30-somethings come the long weekend. And you know the barbecuing and cheese platter game is going to be strong too because everythang will be proudly posted on Insta. It’s pretty much the most-adored posi on the Coast and for that, we can think of no better way to spend Straya Day—splitting our time between the beach and the hill. Expect action on the water with the four-day Burleigh Pro or wander up to North Burleigh SLSC (Friday 26, 10am to 2pm) for food stalls, games and a mega sausage sizzle in the park. Though we beg you, please show your utmost respect for our dear BH… stay classy and take your trash home with you. Kapeesh?

Friday 26 January

Double Baked At Mo’s Desert Clubhouse

If you’re yet to catch a toe tapping, head bobbing music shindig at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse, this Australia Day’s Double Baked throwdown will be the ultimate cherry popper. Send your Uber in the direction of this West Burleigh warehouse, where acts including Hobo Magic, Elegant Shiva, Hemingway and more will take to the small stage while Black Hops frothies flow freely from the kegs. Kicking off at 2pm, tickets are $15 (all profits going to charity) and available now via the website

Australia Day On The Lawn At Garden Kitchen & Bar

Garden Kitchen & Bar’s lawn and alfresco deck can always be counted on for a good time. General entry is free, with a rotating roster of live tunes from 1pm and DJ beats from 6pm, plus plenty of tempting Australiana food specials (including the mega BBQ smoker) to get you going. Never has there been a better opportunity to throw on a summer dress in the daylight hours, sip on a Frose, or lounge about on a beanbag thinking to yourself how bloody lucky we are to live where we live. We’re taking a punt now; this is going to be one of the best Australia Day parties on the Gold Coast in 2018.

Australia Day On The Rooftop At Justin Lane

Justin Lane can always be counted on for a good time, and this long weekend is no exception. Certain to be one of the best Australia Day parties on the Gold Coast if you like to mingle with the beautiful crowd, JL’s soiree kicks off at 3pm with DJ Little Fritter on the decks until well after sundown and Bonnas taking the reigns ‘til the last glammed up punters shimmy out the door. Cocktails in the sunshine, anyone?

Australia Day Night Markets At NightQuarter

Northern Gold Coast’s vibrant night markets, NightQuarter, are celebrating with a feast of Aussie-themed family-friendly entertainment. Think: cockroach races (eep!), thong and dunny roll throwing, egg and spoon races, lamington eating, a mega sausage sizzle plus Aussie tunes by The Twine on the main stage and all your fave street eats. It’s sure shaping up to be one of the biggest Australia Day parties on the Gold Coast if you live on the northern end. Gates open at 4pm and entry is $3.

Australia Day Long Weekend At The Island

Surfers Paradise

These guys have vowed to throw one of the best Australia Day parties on the Gold Coast and we’ll admit they’re on the right track with the promise of a pool deck barbie feast, snags, cocktails, abundant sunshine and, of course, live entertainment and DJs to get the crowd bopping. TBH, The Island has got festivities planned from Thursday right through to a family fun day event on Sunday, so check out the event page for deets and accept this as your open invite.

Australia Day At Mr P.P.’s Deli & Rooftop

If you’re hanging around the northern end on Friday, get your arse on the GLink and jump out at new Southport fave, Mr P.P.’s Deli & Rooftop. Warming up the decks for their first ever Australia Day shindig, doors open at 2pm with Bikini Machine hitting the small stage at 5pm and DJ BRCKS spinning tunes from 7pm ‘til midnight. Bring your drinking shoes too, with $29 cocktail jugs and $20 Aussie beer jugs certain to keep you lubricated, ahem, hydrated.

BBQ In The Park At North Burleigh SLSC

Got the squidlets in tow? Our family-friendly pick is North Burleigh SLSC’s Australia Day BBQ in the Park (10am to 2pm). With food stalls from a host of local vendors, a massive sausage sizzle, live music, plus games, jumping castle and massive inflatable slides to keep the kids out of mischief. BYO chairs, blankets and good mood, folks!

Family-Friendly Australia Day At Broadwater Parklands

You can always count on our proactive council to throw a free family-friendly fiesta at Broadwater Parklands when a public hol rolls around, and Australia Day is no exception. Scoot down to Southport with your picnic rug this Friday between 4pm and 8pm for a 20+ multi-cultural food trucks, games for the kids, live local musos and fireworks—it’s a top choice for those on the northern end with ankle-biters in tow.

Saturday 27 Janaury

Double Hottest 100 Party At Balter Brewery

If your house party last Australia Day weekend got a little out of hand as the final 10 countdown hit the air, and you want to enjoy the music without worrying if the biggest Kendrick Lamar fan is going to take on Angus & Julia groupies in your kitchen, then Currumbin’s cool-as-hell Balter Brewery is the safety house for you and your crew. Spend this year counting down Triple J’s Hottest 100 list with a double whammy of the GABs Hottest 100 Aussie craft beers live broadcast on screens throughout. How will Balter’s fave brews fare is this year’s GABs line up? We know where we’d rather be when Balter drops in at position numero uno (fingers crossed!).

Triple J Hottest 100 Plus Hottest 100 Beer Countdown At Black Hops

If spending the day at the beach just isn’t an option because you despise sand (hey, we’ve met your type before), then your horoscope for this Triple J countdown weekend says you’d better get your arse down to Black Hops Brewery if you want to have any kind of fun. Because, beer and sausage sizzle, duh. Blazing onto the scene last year, Black Hops’ seriously thirst quenching Pale Ale is a real contender in the GABs 2018 count down, so join the party and knock back sip for sip with each song and craft beer to fall. ‘Cause tomorrow is Sunday and there goes that excuse.

JJJ Garden Party At Lost Palms Brewery

Managed to save some energy after a sun-filled day of public holiday good times on Friday? Nice effort, mate! This Saturday Gold Coast’s newest brewery, Lost Palms, is opening early to count down the Hottest 100, with an all-day barbie cook up, frosty housemade brews a-flowing and an invite BYO blow-up swan to dip your toes in the equally glamorous blow up pools…
