Highgate has got to be one of the most popular eating and drinking neighbourhoods in Perth. You’ll often find lines out the door at many of the establishments and for good reason, their offerings are just so dang good!
Food wise, Highgate runs the gamut from bakeries and pizza to organic fare and sweet treats. There’s a wine bar, tequila bar and a bar with a whole lotta gin, as well as one of Perth’s best day spas, a super cool hair salon and a homewares store. Highgate, you got it goin’ on!
Here’s our pick of everything you should be eating, drinking, buying and doing in Highgate.
Mary Street Bakery
Mary Street Bakery is so popular with the Highgate locals that they recently opened up a second bakery in West Leederville! If you’re just after a simple feed, opt for the slow cooked eggs with buttered toast or the free range boiled eggs with buttered soldiers and tomato relish. If you’ve got a hangover of epic proportions or are coming off a juice cleanse, you’ll probably want to try the fried chicken with buttermilk pancakes, peanuts, maple, chilli and a fried egg. Whatever you eat it’s sure to be good. Don’t forget to pick up some baked goods on the way out!
Two words. Dessert degustation. Rochelle Adonis, you have answered our prayers. Featuring seven dessert and cheese courses, while pricey, these degustations are also BYO so you can skimp on the booze! High Tea is another delicious option offered up at Rochelle Adonis, but if you’re just hungry for a little sugar fix you can pop in for a slice of cake or some nougat…yummo!
Fried mac ‘n’ cheese, wood fired pizza and soft serve with Ace magic ‘n’ salted caramel are just a few of the goodies served up at popular Highgate pizza joint, Ace Pizza. Pizzas to look out for are the Godfather with San Daniele prosciutto, san marzano tomatoes and mozzarella and the Nuclear Pig with spiced pork sausage, charred chilli, mushrooms, smoked ricotta, basil and mozzarella—but you can’t really go wrong. If you’d rather enjoy Ace’s delectable goods in the comfort of your own home they’ve also got a takeaway menu. Thanks guys!
Though it’s only been open a few months, Chu Bakery has fit in with the Highgate scene effortlessly. Pop in to grab a delicious coffee and a super cute sweet treat (the croissants and doughnuts are amazing). Don’t pass up the opportunity to enjoy a nice thick piece of takeaway toast, with toppings like hummus, cucumber and chilli, or smashed avocado, whipped feta and sriracha sauce. This bakery is one you'll go back to time and time again.
Enrique’s School For To Bullfighting
Gin abounds at Enrique’s School For To Bullfighting, where the Gintonica menu allows you to choose from 15 gins, 5 tonics and 15 garnishes to create the perfect gin combo for your tastebuds. They’ve also got an impressive cocktail list, we like the Sangria 2015—this beauty is made with red, white or rosé and is served with peach, orange and grape with a side of sherbet. There’s also spritz, beer, sherry and a loooong wine list. Oh and food, glorious food!
Got a hankering for tequila? El Publico is the best place to go. Open ‘til midnight, six days a week, this popular Highgate bar has an impressive and hard to read tequila and mezcal menu, of which you’ll need the hip bar staff to translate for you. Grab a few Mexican snacks (the street corn and fried chickpeas are a must) and have yourself a fiesta at the bar!
Must Winebar is a must visit on the Beaufort Street strip. You’ll find some of the best wines in Perth on the shelves of this moody Highgate staple, and the best bit is a lot of them are available by the glass so you can try a little of everything (well not in one sitting). Yummy cocktails also feature on the menu, as well as vintage champagnes, sparkling whites and dessert wines. Grab a table and enjoy food designed by renowned West Aussie chef, Russell Blaikie.
Popular with the after-brunch crowd in Highgate, Empire Homewares stock some of the most beautiful and lust-worthy furniture we’ve ever laid eyes on. A Perth institution, along with furniture, Empire have got tons of lovely homewares like cushions, rugs, lighting and vases—there’s no chance you’ll leave empty-handed.
Possibly Perth’s most well-known spa, the team at Keturah in Highgate have got pampering down to a fine art and they’ve got a number of awards to prove it. A full service day spa that takes pride in customer service, Keturah have thought of every little detail, from smells and sounds to the chocolate waffle gowns you’ll don, it’s a truly pampered experience. And thanks to Keturah leaving the spa with oil-slicked hair is a thing of the past. You can top off your treatment with a cut, colour and blow dry so you will leave feeling and looking fabulous.
Since opening up shop on Beaufort Street over two years ago, Kave Studio has become popular with Perthians who want a rockin’ ‘do. Decked out in an industrial yet rustic style, the salon offers a relaxing vibe to get your hair did and the Stylists, Brendan and Kate, are some of the best in Perth. If you’re wanting to jump on the blonde bandwagon, Kave use Olaplex to help get your colour there faster and not at the detriment of your locks!
