This Weekend In Perth

If you thought weekends were for doing the grocery shopping, watching TV or visiting your grandma, you thought wrong. These are all tasks (sorry grandma) which should be done mid-week to free up your time for fun things like watching the ballet, attending birthday parties, drinking beer, dressing up like a zombie, having a go at the flying trapeze or partaking in a mysterious weekend somewhere down south.

Here’s our take on what you should fill your diaries with this weekend in Perth!

Friday 9 October

Don’t miss David McAllister’s The Sleeping Beauty ballet as it prances onto stage this weekend in Perth. The highly-anticipated production brings this fairy tale into the modern age with costumes and sets by Gabriela Tylesova. The Sleeping Beauty is in town until Saturday, so don’t dilly dally, get tickets now!

Where: Crown Theatre Perth
When: Until 10 October
Tickets: available here

Paper Mountain will be awash with blooms this Friday for the opening night of Anthologia—an exhibition presented by SJ Finch and Alina Tang. It’s hard to believe it has been two years since the old Myer building in Fremantle was been transformed into Many 6160, a haven for local artists and designers. To celebrate, they’re throwing a big ol’ party on the ground floor, promising plenty of fun for anyone who’s game.

Saturday 10 October

Kicking off this Saturday, the Cutting Edge Paper Cutting Course is the perfect weekend activity for crafty cats. You’ll learn tips and tricks to create beautiful designs and hopefully remain paper cut free! You can sign up for the whole course, or just drop in on Saturday to see if it’s your bag, but don’t forget to register!

Bust out the face paints, coloured hairspray and fake blood this weekend in support of the Brain Foundation at the Perth Zombie Walk. Kicking off from Russel Square in Northbridge, you don’t need to be fit to take part in this walk—in fact, you’re encouraged to limp, shuffle and act like a zombie as you traverse through the shopping malls of the Perth CBD frightening everyone in your path. The event is free, but donations are encouraged.

Where: Russel Square, Northbridge
When: 10am—6pm, 10 October
More information: available here

Sunday 11 October

Though the Twilight Flyers season kicked off a few weeks ago, we think this Sunday will be the perfect day to try your hand (and nerves) at the flying trapeze. Access Circus’ flying trapeze rig will be stationed at Brighton Reserve until 30 December and they are offering up a number of classes for beginners right through to experienced flyers each week. Bookings are essential and be sure to wear socks so your tootsies don’t get caught in the net as you come tumbling down.

Where: Brighton Reserve, Scarborough
When: Season open until 30 December
More information: available here

Prosecco fans won’t want to miss the launch of the Larry Cherubino Ad Hoc ‘Carte Blanc’ Prosecco in the beer garden at The Brisbane Hotel this Sunday. It’s the first prosecco to be produced from West Australian grapes, and from what we’ve heard it’s pretty tasty. And, bonus! If you purchase a bottle to enjoy on the day you’ll also get a pizza thrown in for free. Best!

Where: The Brisbane Hotel
When: 3—6pm, 11 October

All weekend

Let your free spirit fly at Camp Doogs, setting up somewhere near Nannup in WA’s South West this weekend. While we can’t tell you which bands make up the music line-up at Camp Doogs, we can tell you it will be an immersive and elusive experience. It’s either that or a cult. You’ll just have to go and find out. Bus transport is included with tickets, bring your swag, some drinks and an open mind.

Where: 3 hours south of Perth
When: 9—11 October
More information: available here
