9 Epic Events You Shouldn’t Miss At The Noosa Festival Of Surfing

By Claire Plush - 01 Mar 2016

Summer is awesome, but March is seriously epic. And a lot of that epicness comes down to one of our fave events of the year—the Noosa Festival of Surfing.

Celebrating the big 2-5 this year, this massive surf showdown showcases all the things we love about the Coast—good waves (hopefully better than last year, just sayin’), great people, awesome live music, and the best booze and food about town.

Lavishly spread over eight glorious days, there’s a ridiculous amount of events you’re going to want to hit, on top of watching the wide ranging surf comps every day. To save you combing through the guide, we’ve curated our own list of the best events you shouldn’t miss at this year’s Noosa Festival of Surfing—get amongst it!

The Cove Noosa Peruvian Caballito Exhibition

Led by Peru’s first World Surfing Champion, this is a history lesson for any surfer or SUPer. But there’s no blackboards, only waves, and this demo paddle-out featuring Peru’s ancient Caballito de Totora (reed board) will be way more enjoyable to watch than your high school teacher spewing out facts. Promise!

When: 5.30pm, March 4

Where: First Point, Noosa Main Beach

Yoga On The Beach

Yes, this is a surf festival but we all know yoga helps with pretty much everything. Stretch into your day at Noosa with an early morning beach yoga class hosted by Om On Yoga and Noosa Beach Yoga. It’s free and mats are provided, which basically means you have no excuse not to join in. Zilch! Natta! Not one! So get there, and get zen.

When: 7am, March 5 to March 12

Where: First Point, Noosa Main Beach

Surfing Dogs Spectacular

Ummm… surfing dogs = amazeballs. Don’t play the too-cool card or you’ll miss out on this kitsch event. It’s pretty awesome, and no matter how much you don’t wanna love it, you will. Next thing you know; you’ll be taking little Ted on your next surfari down the Coast.

When: From 4.30pm, March 6

Where: Noosa Main Beach

Men Of Wood & Foam World Premiere Screening

When surfers aren’t surfing, they’re talking about it, thinking about it, reading about it, or watching surf films. The first ever screening of Men of Wood & Foam will give the crowd a peek into the lives of Australia’s surfboard industry legends, and if you’re lucky you might even get to do a bit of shoulder-rubbing with those that are present.

When: 7.15pm, March 6

Where: Noosa Main Beach

Bob McTavish Presents “Noosa Early Days”

If Noosa is in your blood, by birth or through a serious love for the place, you’d be crazy to miss this intimate event hosted by surfing pioneer Bob McTavish. Held at one of our fave surf and espresso bars, this super chilled event is set to include film, sliders, and a reading from the man himself. One to drag your salty dog of a dad to.

When: 7pm, March 8

Where: Underground Surf Emporium and Espresso Bar, Noosa Heads

Tunes to Waves

Okay, we don’t know what to call this epic event, so we’ve gone with Tunes to Waves. To keep it simple, Band of Frequencies will be gracing the pop-up beach bar right on the sand with their sounds, as they improvise to live surfing. Sounds pretty rad, no?

When: About 6pm-ish, March 9

Where: XXXX Summer Beach Bar, Noosa Main Beach

Vintage Board Swap Meet

Racks of shiny new sticks in surf shops just not doing it for you no more? Mark this day down, and if you’re not already in Noosa watchin’ the semi-finals then get there asap for the inaugural vintage surf shopping spree. Stalls will be set up at the Beach Bar, so you can swap or buy all the old-school boards and surf memorabilia you want, without moving the car. Score!

When: From 2pm, March 10

Where: XXXX Summer Beach Bar, Noosa Main Beach

After Party with Tropical Zombie

Tropical Zombie are the answer for when you’ve sunk a few cold ones at the festival’s beach bar and now all you want to do is get a little crazy on the d-floor. There’s no way you’ll be able to stand on the sidelines when these six mates crank their surf, indie, pop, whatever-you-wanna-call-it tunes.

When: 8.30pm, March 10

Where: Café Le Monde, Noosa Heads

Silver Surf Stomp – 25th Anniversary Party

It’s kinda a big deal that the festival has hit 25 years, and so what do you do when you hit “big deal” status? You throw a party! Kicking off at the beach bar, you’ll be able to down some doozeys while keeping an eye on the waves. Pete Cullen and Z-Star Delta will be setting the mood with live tunes before everybody crosses the road to party-on at Café Le Monde. It’s gonna be a big night, peeps. So practice your Uber-ing.

When: 6pm, March 11

Where: Noosa Main Beach

Finals Day

Basically, every day there’s all kinds of surfing events—SUP, surf, handplane comps— taking place, but none of them are quite like Finals Day. There’s too many to list without sounding like a final hoe, so we’re gonna suggest getting to First Point around mid-morning and staking a claim on a posi with uninterrupted views. Flit between swims, surfs, chowing down on Hey Bill’s shaved ice, and watching on as girls and guys hit the water on shortboards, logs, and finless fandangles to dance across the waves. The atmosphere is relaxed, but there’s excitement there too—we’re just very low-key about actually showing it ‘round here.

When: From 6.30am, March 12
