Where To Celebrate Australia Day On The Sunshine Coast In 2018

By Sophie Wright
25th Jan 2018

We’ve really hit the jackpot this year my fellow Coasters. Not only have the calendar gods bestowed on us a public holiday just when we needed it but it’s on a freaking Friday. You little ripper! Helllooooo long Australia weekend in paradise.

Many of your favourite places are staying open for the holiday to show you all a damn good time, so make the most of these glorious three days off and get out there and enjoy! Here’s what’s happening on the Sunshine Coast this Australia Day (plus maybe a few cheeky things scheduled for the 27th—to help you keep the good vibes rollin’).

CK Coffee Bar And Wholefoods

This delicious little spot in Mooloolaba isn’t changing a thing this Aus Day…which is so fine, because there ain’t a thing that needs to changed. Open 6am ‘til 4pm on Friday for your brunch needs, start the long weekend off on the right foot at CK.

Little May Espresso

While our beaches tend to draw crowds on Straya’ Day, the long weekend is just as good a time as any to explore our magical hinterland. One of our faves, Little May, is open from 7:30am to 3:30pm on Aus Day and are so ready for you to pop in. Fuel up ahead of a big day of hinterland walks, or satisfy your hunger after a delightful swim at Kondalilla. Now we got you Aus Day dreamin’ haven’t we.

If you didn’t go out for brunch on a public holiday, was it really a public holiday? Ever-reliable Decisions is open to satisfy all your Superfood or Superjunk needs this Australia Day. Popping in for morning tea? Perf – their raw treats will satisfy any sweet tooth. Hankering for a lunchtime feed? There’s bound to be something. Brekky at 3pm? They’ve got you covered. Did we mention their amazing new menu items?

Kenilworth Bakery

When it comes to deliciously decadent treats, Kenilworth Bakery well and truly leads the charge! These guys will be dishing out Tim Tam-infused doughnuts for Aus Day weekend and Aus Day weekend only! You can read more about these bad boys here, but we’d recommend you get ‘em while they’re hot. If doughnuts or Tim Tams ain’t your flavour, don’t worry, you won’t go hungry…try some fresh damper, Anzac bikkies and lamingtons instead!

Sunshine Sunshine

Just when you thought Aus Day noms couldn’t get any more epic, they have somehow managed to. That’s right, the folks at Sunshine Sunshine Espresso have created an Aussie-as treat this year that’s going to be a sell-out for sure. May we introduce to you the Lamington Doughnut Delight. (Remember to breathe.)

In true Aussie style, this super chill café/bar/motorbike shop is holding a droolworthy Aussie Day BBQ to kickstart the day. From 6:30am ‘til 12 noon, the friendly folk at Moto will be serving up their excellent coffee alongside bacon and egg rolls, haloumi rolls, maple pork sausages, and a special pulled pork roll with fried egg and crackling. Yep, you read it right. We’re literally salivating at the thought. They’re also licenced from 10am and we think it’s never too early to crack open a cold one on Aus Day!

Round up the squad for a lunch or dinner date at Locale to celebrate the fact that a) it’s Friyay, b) it’s a public holiday, c) it’s Aus Day and d) it’s a longgggg weekend. This sleek modern Italian restaurant is a little pocket of heaven tucked away in a protected corner of bustling Hastings Street. Locale always seems busy, but you only have to glance at the menu to see why…we literally die over their pizzas and pastas. Bookings recommended. What a bellissimo way to spend our very own national holiday.

Pier 33

Imagine an afternoon spent sipping cocktails and sampling fresh seafood, sitting under palm trees and watching the sun go down. Sounds divine, doesn’t it? Live the lush life this Australia Day at Pier 33. Take advantage of the gooorgeous weather we’ve been having and BYO picnic rug to enjoy the festivities these guys have organised. With live music and a special Aussie Day menu, you’d be crazy not to pop in at least for a Milo soft-serve. For all the event dets check here

Land & Sea Brewery

Land & Sea Brewery quietly opened its doors and no one was happier than us. What a perfect addition to the Coast, just in time for Australia Day and the end of summer. Hurrah! Come in and taste their signature drop, the flavourful craft Coastie Common. The burgers go alright too.

The Imperial Hotel

If pub grub and good beers make for your ideal Australia Day, head to the Imperial Hotel for exactly that! This Eumundi favourite has a handful of meal deals throughout the day that will satisfy your hunger without breaking the bank – for lunch, chow down on a burger and a pot of beer for $20, or tuck into ribs and a pot for $25 at dinner! Free pool and games, and live music will keep those public holiday vibes going all day long.

High Tide

High Tide knows what’s up this Australia Day! They’ll be open as normal and keeping things effortlessly cool, as usual. The snacks will be cookin’, the drinks (alcoholic or not, of course) will be flowin’, and resident DJ Jim Fox will be doing his usual funky Friday sunset sesh. Nice one, guys.

It’s always a happy Friday at Bordertown, especially when it’s a public holiday! Serving up some of the most delish American and Mexican food and drink on the Coast, Bordertown are open as usual this Aus Day.  Not one to shy away from giving their peeps a good deal, take advantage of their $20 lunch special or their 3-5 o’clocksies with no regrets.

Looking for something to do in Caloundra this Friday? Drift have you well and truly covered. Open from 6am ‘til late, they’ll be hosting an epic BBQ feat. live music to celebrate our national holiday.

Betty's Burgers

One of our faves Betty’s Burgers will be celebrating everything Australian and are bringing back the infamous Betty’s Aussie Classic Burger for the long weekend. It’s tender, juicy and Aussie-as. Have a swim first and then swing by for one of these puppies. Woot!

Noosa Beach House

Celebrate Australia Day with a twist. Grab a Taco from the Noosa Beach House Bar’s Street Vendor from 12pm – 4pm. Choose an Aussie Lamb or a traditional Mexican. The best part is they are only $5 bucks. What a bargain.

The Post Office

There ain’t no party like a Post Office partay! As there’s no Triple J countdown on the 26th this year (it’s the next day, don’t fret), these guys have pulled together a stellar lineup of artists to perform live in an Aus Day extravaganza! Headlining are Indian Summer, Midas Gold and Junor, supported by a stack of unique, talented local artists. Doors open at 11:30am, so you can even have a sleep-in. Get your tix here.

MV Catalina

It’s the MV Catalina’s second birthday, and we’re all invited! (Until it sells out, that is.) Wear your party pants and dancing shoes aboard the Catalina this Friday for an absolutely rockin’ good time! Fresh off a European summer stint in Ibiza, UK superstar DOORLY will be on the decks spinning some of the best beats this side of the equator. Supported by local DJ fave Tim Fuchs, your tix (which can be purchased riiiiiiiight here) include 3.5 hours of entertainment on the boat and a welcome drank. So fun! But hurry, before it sells out.

Twilight Markets Caloundra

Bulcock Beach

January 26th is the last night of Caloundra’s Twilight Markets, so there’s no time like the present to get amongst it! Soak up the last of the summer holiday spirit and head down to the Bulcock Beach Esplanade between 5pm and 9pm, where artisan crafts, homemade gifts, food stalls and live music await you.

Marcoola Rocks Australia Day

Marcoola Surf Club is hosting another epic Australia Day bash this year! Kicking off at 11am, they’ve upped the ante this year with their live music program – 7 artists in 7 hours! There’ll also be food stalls a-plenty, so it’s shaping up to be one heck of a day - check out the awesome line-up here.

Aussie Day at Downunder Drive

If you consider yourself a true blue, fair dinkum Aussie sheila or bloke, you should totally head down to Aussie World for Australia Day. With a heap of activities, great coffee, an Aussie brekky, and their famous dunny races, Aussie Day at Downunder Drive sure is a barrel of laughs!

MooloolaBaBQ Festival

Okay, so this one takes place on the 27th – but can you actually think of a better way to cure your Aussie Day hangover than with a barbie by the beach? This baby is happening at The Wharf precinct from 10am ‘til 8pm, this isn’t just your average Aussie BBQ, with everything from seafood to lamb ready to be fired up, it’s a BBQ for all tastes! PLUS, it’s all for a good cause – all proceeds go to the Cancer Council. Should be a ripper of a day! Grab your tickets here, or at the gates. Did we mention kids under 12 are free?

And we’re going to throw in one last suggestion for good measure. If you’re wanting to escape our beautiful hood on Australia Day this year in a bid to get away from the hordes of tourists you could always consider a family-friendly day trip to Tangalooma Island Resort located on the amazing Moreton Island. It’s right in our backyard after all and what’s better than snorkelling inside shipwrecks?

With so many options this Aus Day on the Sunshine Coast it seems the opportunities for you and your faves to celebrate in style are endless.

Loving all our amazing places here on the Coast. Check out this new artisan bakery that has just opened it's doors in Noosa.
