Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) kicks off in Sydney on Sunday. As well as a full-blown roster of major runway shows featuring new resort collections from some of our favourite Aussie labels (P.E Nation, Ten Pieces and Holiday by Emma Mulholland, to name a few)—there are heaps of ways to get in on the style mayhem unfolding everywhere in the city next week.
Are you ready to go full fashun? Here’s your ultimate guide to what’s on, where to be and where to be seen across Fashion Week.
Jonathan Simkhai Resort ’20 Runway
Showing in Australia for the very first time, LA-based designer Jonathan Simkhai is hosting a public runway show to reveal his brand-new resort collection. Hosted on the lawn at North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club, it’s set to be quite the spectacle and everyone is invited to watch. The label is loved by the likes of Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Lady Gaga and Miranda Kerr, and you might have noticed Victoria’s Secret Angel Josephine Skriver in one of his incredible designs at the Met Gala this week.
When: Monday 13 May, 4pm
Where: The Lawn, North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club
Fashion Your Canvas
To celebrate Fashion Week, BYO painting class champions Cork and Chroma are hosting a special fashion meets painting class, where you’ll be able to marry up style and art while sipping a glass or two of wine. Basically, the guided session will involve creating a complete outfit on a canvas using both fabric and paint. Head over here for more information.
When: Thursday 16 May, 7pm - 10pm
Where: Cork and Chroma, 55 Holt Street Surry Hills
Fashion Week Seminars
Get in on some of the biggest conversations in fashion right now. Hosted at Fashion Week HQ at Carriageworks, three fashion-centred panel discussions will inspire you across fashion publishing, fashion careers and the pressing nature of sustainability for the fashion industry. At the "Women in Media" panel you'll hear from major voices in publishing right now (Vogue, POPSUGAR and Urban List); "IMG Fashion Hour of Power" is modeled off of the globally-recognised fashion industry training program at IMG Academy in the U.S., IMG Fashion Camp; and "Fashionably Conscious" will tackle the tough problem of pushing sustainability. Head here for more info and tickets.
When: Friday 17 May, from 2pm
Magic Light, The Official Opening Night Party
If sipping espresso martinis and partying with fashion heroes, celebrities, models and influencers—all to the sound of Flight Facilities sounds like your kind of deal, you’ll want to nab tickets to Magic Light, Fashion Week’s official opening party. It’s astrology-themed, everyone gets a special Swarovski gift bag (because the goodie bags are the best part of Fashion Week) and there are tarot readings to suss your style future. Head over here for tickets.
When: Friday 17 May, 8pm
Weekend Runway Shows
While runway shows are typically super exclusive invite-only affairs, reserved for celebrities, influencers, editors and fashion industry legends, Fashion Week in Sydney offers an incredible opportunity to experience the full runway like the style elite.
Prep your street style looks for the final day of Fashion Week—because you can actually purchase tickets, sit front row and lap up an extra special preview of some seriously amazing resort, high summer and cocktail collections. There are two runways to experience, various drinks packages to indulge in and a whole lot of awesome style activations happening at Carriageworks to get around (think hairstyling workshops, modeling workshops and more). Tickets and more info are here.
When: Saturday 18 May, various times from 4pm
Closing Night Showcase With P.E Nation
If like us, you love everything P.E Nation and would happily live in anything and everything the brand dishes out, you’ll want to add Fashion Week’s closing night showcase to your weekend plans.
