Two Minutes With Garth Cook

By Ellie Schneider - 01 Jul 2014

Since debuting his eponymous label back in 2009, Garth Cook has certainly been making waves on Australia's fashion scene. It seems this innovative designer's star is continually on the rise, having won numerous accolades including his recent nomination for the prestigious International Woolmark Prize.

He's a designer that continues to push the boundaries, and it's no surprise that Garth Cook's latest collection, Spring Summer 2014/15, features a bright colour palette, beautiful luxe fabrics, flashy sequin,s and even fluro orange feathers (fabulous!)—a throwback to '80s styling but with Cook's iconic contemporary edge.

We were lucky enough to catch up with the coveted designer to find out what's in the works and hear about his wonderful fashion journey so far.

TUL: What inspired your fifth collection, Spring Summer 2014/15 'Dress un Dress'?
GC: Dreaming of Bermuda holidays, casual sports wear x eveningwear and the process of getting dressed and undressed.

TUL: Who isn't dreaming about Bermuda holidays! Can you tell us about the design process?
GC: The design process can change each season. It depends on the inspiration and the idea behind the collection. The design process always includes sketching, toiling, and testing.

TUL: What are your favourite pieces from the collection?
GC: The feather garments. They are fun and blend the idea of eveningwear with sports wear in an interesting and unique way.

TUL: Congratulations on your recent International Woolmark Prize nomination. How did you celebrate?
GC: Champagne party time!

TUL: Now, lets go back a bit. How did you first get into the world of fashion?

GC: I have always wanted to be a fashion designer. My brother discovered through our family tree that we had tailors in our family, so hopefully it's in my blood. I had a career as a jewellery designer for seven years, but finally organised my life so I could study fashion.

Once I graduated, I moved to London and interned with designers for a few seasons.

TUL: You're originally from Perth. What was it like stepping out into the Big Smoke?
GC: Perth is the big smoke!!

TUL: How do you approach each new collection?
GC: With an open mind.

TUL: You have said that you always design with an iconic figure in mind. Who has been most influential? Who is your muse?
GC: I have many muses. People I work with through to clients and interns. Women are intriguing.

TUL: Lastly, what's next on the horizon?
GC: Woolmark, summer production and AW15!
