Cooked It | How To Make Steamed Vegetarian Dumplings At Home

This tidy little recipe is about to save you a bunch of forgettable nights in Chinatown—not because they were crummy evenings, but because you drank so much Jacob’s Creek Trilogy Cuvee Brut that you literally can’t remember them.

The good news for you is that, contrary to popular belief, dumplings aren’t that difficult to make (as long as you buy the wonton wraps instead of making them yourself). So you’ll be knocking the socks off your dinner party guests without even breaking a sweat...unless you plan on eating all four servings on your own and giving yourself the food sweats anyway.

Here’s how to make authentic steamed vegetarian dumplings at home.


  • Ginger
  • 5 French beans, diced
  • 1 Carrot, diced
  • 1 Shallot stem, sliced
  • 1/2 Fresh chilli pepper
  • 4 Shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 Firm piece of tofu, diced
  • Wonton wraps
  • 1 Egg, beaten
  • 1 Tbsp of soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp of oyster sauce
  • 2 Tbsp of sesame oil
  • 2 Tbsp of vinegar


  1. Delete all the photos on your Facebook profile from that time you went to Chinatown during your uni days and challenged a street dancer to a ‘break off’ and dislocated your shoulder.
  2. Pop to the shops to stock up on ingredients. Resist the chocolate hot cross buns, you will eat all six in the car on the way home, there’s not point trying to deny it. You’re sick.
  3. Head home and heat the oil in a pan, then stir in the sliced shallots until they smell so damn good you have to stop (literally, cook them until they’re fragrant).
  4. Then add the diced carrots and french beans, cooking for approx another 30 seconds.
  5. Now you need to stir in the the tofu pieces, along with the soy sauce and oyster sauce, before then adding the chilli and cooking the combo for another minute. Now leave these freshly stir fried ingredients to cool, and watch half an episode of Black Mirror or something—you’ve earned it.
  6. Once the mixture is nearing room temperature, wrap a spoonful of the stir fried ingredients in a wonton skin (forget your burrito skills, you can learn exactly how to wrap them here), and use the beaten egg to bind the skin together.
  7. The next step is to heat the oil in a pan and sear the dumplings for 1 minute at medium heat while giving the pan a quick toss to ensure all sides are seared evenly. Like you’ve seen them do on Hell’s Kitchen. Go on, do it.
  8. Then add water to the pan, just enough to cover the first third of the dumplings, so basically a couple of centimetres. Then pop the lid on the pan and leave the dumplings to cook until the wonton skin turns translucent.
  9. Dish these bad boys up with your favourite sauces and Instagram a photo with the hashtag #iwillremembertheseinthemorning.
