What You’ll Be Eating in 2015

2014 was a bumper year for indulgent food; anyone with a hint of fresh muffin top can tell you that (don’t make us count how many cronuts or buckets of fried chicken we ate this year).

Move over quinoa, step down kale, and lest we forget our dear friend, the donut, and its fancy cousin, the cronut: Here are our predictions of the 2015 food trends that will be on your plate, and in your belly this year.

Soft Serve Ice Cream

Completely dominating the New York food scene in 2014, this humble childhood fave is making a comeback, albeit a seriously grown up one. Mr Whippy is so 80’s; what the people want in 2015 is gourmet flavours such as dulche de leche, Sicilian lemon, green tea, and other flavour-gasms that will make you toss out your Ben and Jerry’s.

Seaweed

No longer just that thing that keeps sushi together, we’ll all be gorging on seaweed next year. With more health benefits than calories in a sausage roll, this slippery ocean algae has been a part of cooking for centuries, and will be top of your fad food list in 2015. There’s even talk of seaweed butter, seaweed beer… Seaweed thick-shake, anyone?

Matcha Tea

This finely milled green tea may have been a bit of a slow burner (it’s been around for more than 1,000 years), but 2015 will be its time to shine. Known for its nigh-on magical properties to burn calories and fat (take that muffin top!), not to mention having more antioxidants in its little finger than the infamous goji berry, this ancient tea will be in everything from your morning juice (or latte!) to your dessert.

Fermented foods

We’ve clearly not had our fill of the fermentation process this year, with this healthy 2015 food trend set to go mainstream. An amazing digestion aider and all round hero dish—we’re looking at you, sauerkraut—the fermentation process can be applied to almost any fruit or veggie going. Look out for Asian staples such as Kimchi and Kombucha on menus everywhere.

Hybrids

Blame it on the cronut, but it seems like hybrids are having a moment. Pretzel burgers, pie milkshakes, donut ice cream sandwiches, and Krispy Kreme donut burgers are all making their way onto menus, and only time will tell what they’ll think of next. If the trends we’re seeing in the world’s hottest foodie destinations are anything to go by, expect some weird combo’s in 2015. Heck, even Martha Stewart’s on board—check out her ‘brookie’ recipe (that’s a brownie and cookie, duh).

Maple Water

Move over coconut water, there’s a new super drink in town and the hottest liquid food trend of 2015. The sap of the Maple tree is being touted round town with claims of various health and dietary benefits, and is already fast becoming the cool kids alternative to the coconut (such a fickle bunch we are).
