We’re confident you’ll agree that we live in a pretty good looking part of the world.
Though, it’s not always beach, sand, flip flops, and Fosters like the rest of the world seem to think… we’ve got natural stunners smattered all around our fine city! If you’ve been waiting your whole life for that “sweep me off my feet” moment, then we have nine places close to home that’ll do just the trick.
Everyone loves a waterfall as much as they love singing “Waterfalls” by TLC at the mention of the word. It just so happens one of the best to visit for a good jaw dropping happens to be off Eagle Heights Drive, Mount Tamborine. It’s a pleasant 1.5km walk to the falls surrounded by lush rainforest, all sorts of Australian creatures, and that roaring sound of water thundering its way over a cliff towards the ground. Nature just knows.
“Ahhh the serenity”... is exactly what you will say when you find yourself on Dreamtime Beach down at Fingal Head. As it stands, this beautiful patch of sand and ocean is pretty vacant and obviously magical hence the whole “dreamtime” title. So, all we ask is that you take turns visiting this incredible location so it doesn’t get too crowded and we can stay in awe of one of the most perfect beaches in Australia. Big claim, and this spot definitely deserves it!
Mt Tamborine’s Rotary Lookout
Being a mountain and all, it’s a sure bet you will get a sweet view on the drive up, but, nothing compares to turning the engine off, jumping out into the serene sounds of nature and filling your eyes with a panoramic view of the entire Gold Coast and surroundings. Bring along a picnic basket and a bottle of bubbles and sit back. Ahhhh, now that’s livin’!
Mt Tamborine Worm Caves
When the sun goes down, the magic happens. Distancing yourself from the sparkle of Surfers Paradise that usually lights up the sky at night, you can trek out to Mt Tamborine and see nature throw its own party. It’s got a Fern Gully vibe throughout and you’ll be waiting for fairies to start flying out along the entire stroll. With a little bit of moonlight as your guide, you’ll feel like you’re on a serious expedition and then you’ll reach the caves that rest under ancient tree roots and, nek minute… mind = blown. Tiny little sparkles coming from everywhere!
Burleigh Headland Lookout on a clear blue day
We’re all pretty familiar with Burleigh Heads and yeah, it gets a few mentions, but, can you blame us?! It’s so damn pretty! Add in a pearler of a day and it just gets increasingly more stunning by the minute. To appreciate Burleigh in all her glory it’s as simple as throwing on your active wear, strolling your way to the top of Burleigh Headland’s Tumgun Lookout and gazing out at those deep blues of the sea. Why would you want to live anywhere else?
Pizzey Park for a leisurely stroll
This little treat lies tucked behind a sports field in that unknown zone of “am I in Miami or Varsity Lakes?”. Who knew that hundreds of pine-cone trees planted closely together could look so good? Throw a lake and a great walking track around it and you’ll be making this one a regular spot for hangs, there is no doubt about it.
Sunset At Hope Island’s The Boardwalk Tavern
We haven’t forgotten all those glorious sunsets that winter threw at us this year, and summer has kept them coming. The perfect perch to soak in the day’s final rays is on the waterfront at Hope Island’s The Boardwalk Tavern, with some champagne flowing as the sunset doubles in its reflection on the water. Um, amazingness overload.
SUP Style On Tallebudgera Creek
For those days when waves feel like a little too much to deal with, then your best bet is finding a patch of sand at Tally and taking a leisurely paddle in the clear, calm waters. Its castaway vibe gives off so many holiday feels that you sometimes forget you’re just “down the road”. Grab a stand-up paddle board and go exploring along the shoreline of the conserved bushland park, maybe spot a koala or two and feel blessed that, on the Gold Coast, we really have the best of Australia in our very backyard!
Yoga in the early light at Tugun
For the early riser, there’s no better way to start your day than putting some of your favourite yoga poses into action while the sun makes its way up for another stellar Gold Coast day. Stretch your limbs for a little mind, body, and soul cleansing with Yoga In Daily Life at Tugun, where all it costs is a small donation for attending! Namaste.
Keen for more things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend? Here’s five secret lookouts we probably shouldn’t tell you about.
