2 Minutes With CAMILLA AND MARC

By Brittany Ferdinands - 19 Apr 2015

Since launching in 2003, CAMILLA AND MARC has become one of Australia’s most highly regarded fashion labels. Internationally renowned for their quality and timeless designs, the label has become a staple for all fashionistas who can’t get enough of their softly tailored apparel.

Our credit cards are very familiar with their Paddington store, and we were lucky enough to get two minutes with this dynamic duo. We get the scoop from Camilla and Marc Freeman on everything from working with your sibling to upcoming autumn trends to their wardrobe essentials.

Camilla Freeman

TUL: Let’s trace back to the early days, how did it all begin and what inspired you to get into fashion design?

Camilla: Growing up, I was always very creative and did art for extra-curricular activities throughout my schooling. Also, both of my grandmothers were incredibly stylish women so they sparked my interest in fashion.

TUL: We all know how difficult it can be living with a sibling let alone working with one! Can you give us the inside scoop on what’s it’s like?

Camilla: Marc and I have a very close bond and there’s a great deal of trust between us, not to mention we really enjoy each other’s company. We’re very fortunate to have different strengths, which allow us to balance various departments of the company.

TUL: You have well and truly earned your reputation as one of Australia’s top fashion designers. Why do you think the Camilla and Marc brand resonates with Australian women so well?

Camilla: All women, Australian or otherwise, appreciate high quality and timeless designs. While CAMILLA AND MARC is known for soft tailoring and unique textures, we always have a certain relaxed vibe, which encapsulates that Australian lifestyle perfectly.

TUL: Describe your personal style in three words.

Camilla: Modern. Tailored. Classic.

TUL: If there were such thing as a ‘typical day’ what would it involve?

Camilla: There is definitely no ‘typical’ day for me, but my mornings and afternoons usually consist of the school run with my children. Otherwise, you’ll find me in CAMILLA AND MARC HQ working with our different departments. Then, I may attend a special event during the evening or cook dinner for my family.

TUL: What inspired the Autumn/Winter collection and what styles are you particularly excited about?

Camilla: Our AW15 collection was inspired by the notion of light and shade; including the concept of reflection and refraction. As a result, you’ll notice contrasting textures, graphic prints and modern layering.

TUL: We love your gorgeous new candle range! What memories have you captured and what is your favourite scent?

Camilla: My scent is a mixture of the subtle perfume from white David Austin roses and the rich aroma of a single blackcurrant leaf. This classic combination reminds me of home.

TUL: Forgetting fashion and business, what is your favourite holiday destination?

Camilla: I studied my Masters in Florence, so I love returning there as much as I can. The art, architecture and food there are, for me, unrivalled. I especially enjoy spending time in Tuscany away from the busy city centre.

TUL: What are your top five wardrobe essentials?

Camilla:

•    A classic, tailored blazer.
•    A beautiful, cashmere knit.
•    A pair of modern loafers.
•    Costume jewellery such as a unique necklace or pair of earrings.
•    A pair of statement sunglasses.

TUL: And lastly, what is your favourite way to spend a day off in Sydney?

Camilla: Spending the day with my family on our boat in Sydney Harbour.

TUL: Let’s trace back to the early days, how did it all begin and what inspired you to get into fashion design?

Marc: It all started with an idea… Camilla was contacted by Fashion Week to show her graduation collection so she approached me to go into business with her. We designed another collection together and hence CAMILLA AND MARC was born

TUL: We all know how difficult it can be living with a sibling let alone working with one! Can you give us the inside scoop on what’s it’s like?

Marc: Camilla and I are very close in age and, growing up, we shared many experiences together. We value candour in our relationship, which means we are very honest and straightforward with one another.

TUL: Describe your personal style in three words.

Marc: Tailored. Refined. Timeless.

TUL: If there were such thing as a ‘typical day’ what would it involve?

Marc: I usually start my mornings with the paper and a coffee, and then head straight to CAMILLA AND MARC HQ. My days consist of many meetings, emails and phone calls. Afterwards, in the evening, I will usually attend an event.

TUL: We love your gorgeous new candle range! What memories have you captured and what is your favourite scent?

Marc: I combined the warming aroma of black tea with a woody undertone to create the feeling of a relaxing Sunday morning with a book in hand.

TUL: Forgetting fashion and business, what is your favourite holiday destination?

Marc: It all depends on the season, but a particular favourite is NYC.

TUL: What are your top five wardrobe essentials?

Marc:
•    A custom-made suit.
•    A classic, transeasonal trench coat.
•    A leather overnight bag.
•    A pair of loafers.
•    A pair of sunglasses.

TUL: And lastly, what is your favourite way to spend a day off in Sydney?

Marc: The Bondi the Bronte walk or spending the day on the boat in Sydney Harbour.
