Ah May, how we love you. May means cute trench coats that haven’t yet become cumbersome, strawberries that are totally affordable, and mulled wine on our favourite menus. Yup, it’s almost winter and we choose celebrate rather than hibernate with these fab excuses to eat, drink and play. From a yoga supper club to Pyrmont’s ever-popular food fair, here are our picks of things to do in Sydney that involve food, glorious food.
Rum DMC - 4th May
Awesome name, even better concept. The DMC part actually stands for drink, match, compare, and that’s exactly what you’ll be given the opportunity to do on Monday May 4 from 6:30 till 8:30. Papa Gede’s Bar will host the event, run by Sydney Cocktail Club and open to all rum fans. $30 will buy you a six-rum tasting paddle and two drinks.
Book via Sydney Cocktail Club.
The Yoga Supper Club - 25th May
How could you say no to an evening of yoga, live music and dinner catered by Black Star Pastry? How?! The event will be held on Friday May 25 at 6:30pm in a secret Alexandria location, adding an air of mystery to the whole affair. It’s hard to put a price on mindful living, but in this case tickets are $125 including dinner and demonstrations.

Pyrmont Festival - 15th to 24th May
This 10-day event will showcase more than 50 restaurants, wine bars, hotels, producers and artists from Pyrmont and Mudgee. The food, wine and treats from these two delicious regions will be on display along the foreshore at Pirrama Park in Pyrmont for an outdoor event on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 of May (11am to 5pm). This is a family friendly event with live music and cooking demonstrations, as well as rides and entertainment for the kiddies.

Sagra Dinners at Berta - every Tuesday night
If you’ve been missing the sweet treats from pastry queen Christine Manfield then fret no more because the lady herself will be gracing the kitchens at Berta to introduce their new winter menu. Manfield will join new head chef Jamie Irving for a series of special dinners held each Tuesday as part of the restaurant’s Sagra Tuesday tradition. Each dinner will celebrate a single ingredient and include four courses for $65 per person.
Contact Berta for more details and to make a booking.
The Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular - 30th May
May 30 is the day to head to Australian Technology Park for a festival of beer. That’s right, a whole festival dedicated to beer. There will be 300 craft beers (and about as many hipsters), 120 exclusive festival beers, brewery stands, paddle art, seminars, games and even a silent disco (which we’re sure will be more fun than it sounds). Tickets start from $35 and include a GABS Official Guide and Coopers festival glass.
Check out gabsfestival.com.au for all the details.
Mad Hatter’s Champagne Brunch at Ananas - 31st May
No two words go together better than “champagne brunch”. Expect of course “French buffet” and “bottomless flute”. You’re in for a treat as Ananas Brasserie combines all of these things on Sunday May 31 in a Mad Hatter-style party. Indulge in a roaming buffet; take in the live entertainment and rest assured that your glass will never be empty with the all-you-can-drink package. It’s $69 for the buffet and an extra $50 for a two hour champagne package.
Call Ananas to book.
Batlow CiderFest - 16th May
Batlow isn’t just a word printed on those little stretchy stickers stuck to our apples. Turns out Batlow is an actual place and it’s only a few hours south of Sydney. What’s even more exciting is that this joint is holding their annual CiderFest on May 16 and there’s a truckload of things to do (and drink), including market stalls, plenty of cider to taste and buy and even a cider conference.
Check out all the details at their website.
Regional Dinners at Vini - every Tuesday night
Tuesdays at Vini is regional night, with a $55 four-course menu inspired by a different area of Italy each week. May will celebrate Puglia, Liguria, Friuli-Venetzia and Sardinia with wines sourced from each region to match.
Bookings can be made by calling or emailing Vini.
