When we love something we really, truly LOVE something! And that’s exactly how we feel about our new relationship! Some things just go together. Like cookies and cream, Brandon and Brenda… The Urban List and MINI!

Our two families have collaborated to bring discerning readers and drivers a new fortnightly series – MINI Fave 5s. The must-try guide to Sydney, celebrating the launch of the new MINI 5-door hatch!

So, Urban Listers, clear the diary and get excited for our Fave 5s. There’s a whole year of eating, drinking and discovering to be done…

We’re not sure about you, but our hearts have a tendency to beat that little bit faster when we enter a beautiful homewares store. It’s kind of like being a kid in a candy shop, except the candy in this case is furniture and beautiful knick knacks for the home (and slightly more expensive than said candy).

Sure, there are lots of wonderful homewares stores in Sydney, but here are our five favourites that inspire us every time we set foot in store. Prepare to have a new found disdain for your current sofa, bedside table, throw cushions or vases—you’ll be wanting to upgrade after a visit to one of these homewares hotspots.

Small Spaces

Not all of us are blessed with vast open plan houses. In fact, many of us city dwellers have fairly modest sized apartments (that would be pretty much all of us at The Urban List Sydney)—but that’s no issue for the guys at Sydney homewares store, Small Spaces. Stocking clever and beautiful living solutions with a focus on “living lightly”, it just goes to show, it’s not always size that counts.

Great Dane

Not only is this Sydney design store named after one of our favourite breeds of dogs, it’s also one of our favourite places to ogle beautiful furniture and homewares. Showcasing hand selected pieces from Danish and Scandinavian design houses and manufacturers, a wander around this showroom will have you mentally redesigning your home to make space for something you’ve come across at Great Dane.

This Australian owned furniture store has us wanting to replace all the furniture in our apartments with beautifully crafted pieces. Sure, they aren’t cheap but we like to think of these as investment pieces because a good piece of furniture is going to last you wayyyy longer and make you wayyyy happier than that I’ll-just-buy-this-cheap-piece-of-crap-until-I-can-afford-a-better-one sofa/table/desk that you planned on getting rid of but four years later, you still have it in all its MDF glory. Beyond furniture, Jardan also stocks drool-worthy homewares that turn your apartment from uni-student chic to actual chic.

We want all the things! Seriously though, Koskela in Rosebery stock so much awesomeness, it’s pretty easy to blow a whole pay cheque and a good few hours going through their products. From the designer bean bags (yes, they actually make them look good) to the most amazing sofas and chairs, Koskela know how to find the best in furniture and homewares and bring them together in one ridiculously cool warehouse space.

Surry Hills

Workshopped is a tiny design store in Surry Hills that’s filled to the brim with wonderful things for the home. Since 2001, Workshopped has been exhibiting, manufacturing and selling Australian designed products, which helps to shine a spotlight on the talent we have in our own backyards (or homes, if you will). Whether you’re looking for a gift for someone with a design eye, or sourcing something perfect for your own home, we must warn you—if you’re anything like us, you’ll find it hard leaving this Sydney design store without buying something.

We're thrilled to partner with MINI to bring you our Fave 5 series—our fortnightly guide to the best of the best in Sydney. From food to fashion, Campari to Crossfit, each Fave 5 edition is researched and recommended by The Urban List, and driven by the new MINI 5-Door Hatch—putting the city at your fingertips and giving you the freedom to explore it!
