When we love something we really, truly LOVE something! And that’s exactly how we feel about our new relationship! Some things just go together. Like cookies and cream, Brandon and Brenda… The Urban List and MINI!
Our two families have collaborated to bring discerning readers and drivers a new fortnightly series – MINI Fave 5s. The must-try guide to Sydney, celebrating the launch of the new MINI 5-door hatch!
So, Urban Listers, clear the diary and get excited for our Fave 5s. There’s a whole year of eating, drinking and discovering to be done…
It’s pretty common knowledge that you don’t mess with someone until they have their morning coffee. Sure, the inner west and Surry Hills area have a good thing going on when it comes to coffee and general café awesomeness, but what of those in Sydney’s North Shore?
Fortunately, a number of excellent coffee spots have set up shop, serving the good (and soon to be warmly caffeinated) people of the north. Here are our faves…
With coffee from The Grounds Roasters, you know that the coffee at The Incinerator is going to be top notch. Not only is it one of the coolest looking cafes in Sydney (it literally used to be an incinerator), The Incinerator serves up a tasty seasonal and sustainable menu, as well as friendly service. We particularly love the highly Instagrammable green coffee cups and the abundance of potential dog pats made possible by the regular canine visitors.
Salvage Specialty Coffee
It really is all about the coffee at Salvage Specialty Coffee in Artarmon. Headed up by three chill guys—Dan Yee, Matt Goto and Toby Cutler—Salvage stocks Artificer Specialty Coffee, Sungold jersey milk and breads from The Bread and Butter Project. We suggest trying one of their very own cold brew coffees (and keeping the great bottle) and giving one of their limited but delicious food offerings a go.
Bay Ten Espresso
Hidden away from the bustling footpaths of North Sydney sits Bay Ten Espresso. Frequented by cyclists (who seem to know their way around a good coffee), this North Sydney café is doing some wonderful things in the world of caffeinated beverages. There’ll be no judgy eyes if you order a soy mocha, but if you’re after something a little more serious, the 16 hour cold brew served over ice with or without milk is refreshing (especially if you’ve been cycling).
The Roots Espresso
No longer do North Sydney desk jockeys have to deal with sub-par coffee! The Roots Espresso serve consistently good coffee (and a great brekkie to boot). For those who can’t do standard milk, the fellas here also stock almond milk, so you don’t need to miss out on your morning fix. Coffee offerings also include specialised Single Origin coffee available as a pour-over or siphon, and if you weren’t already convinced they were serious about coffee, they also hold public cupping sessions on the first Thursday of the month at 5.30pm.
Ritual Coffee Traders
Easily one of our favourites on the Lower North Shore, Ritual Coffee Traders are locally known for their excellent coffee. Upon arrival, you’ll notice that the patron uniform is primarily of the “sports luxe” variety, but we’re totally on board with that. The pour-over here is pretty special and comes out with a shot of ground beans and a pocket thermometer (because 55 degrees is the best temperature for coffee—make a note of it). Order some food if you have the time—they have some healthy and delicious options—and call it a morning.
We're thrilled to partner with MINI to bring you our Fave 5 series—our fortnightly guide to the best of the best in Sydney. From food to fashion, Campari to Crossfit, each Fave 5 edition is researched and recommended by The Urban List, and driven by the new MINI 5-Door Hatch—putting the city at your fingertips and giving you the freedom to explore it!
