Trending: Is Olaplex The Answer to All of Your Hair Dreams?

By Bree Nowland - 23 Aug 2015

Ever dyed your hair or opted for some highlights over summer only to find that your ends have been completely ruined? Yeah. Me too. Being a slave to balayage for years and years seriously takes its toll on your locks.

Which brings me to my next question… Have you ever wondered how those celebrities dye their hair 50-shades-of-every-colour-other-than-grey and yet it still looks lush, shiny and healthy? We’re talking Kim Kardashian going from basically black to platinum overnight. How on earth do they do it?! How doesn’t their hair fall out or break off… Maybe they all wear wigs? No. We know the secret. It’s a little somethin’ something’ called Olaplex. It’s new to Australia and it’s that good that we’re prepared to say if your hairdresser doesn’t offer it it’s time to find a new salon. We know what you’re thinking – do I really need it? The answer is yes. Let us explain why…

Olaplex is a revolutionary ingredient that has been coined everything from hair colourists holy grail, an absolute game changer and even the answer to all your (coloured) hair dreams. The best way I can describe Olaplex is to think Olaplex to hair is like flour is to a cake. Think of baking a cake without flour. Sure, you can do it. There are substitute products that will make your cake rise. But, flour is what will give you a deliciously fluffy cake that rises perfectly and cooks evenly (Okay, I’m no expert baker, but you get the general gist, right?!) Olaplex can be added to any hair colour. It’s a two-step process that sees a cream-like conditioner substance, Olaplex No. 1 - Bond Multiplier mixed in with your colour and then followed with application of the Olaplex No. 2 - Bond Perfector after your colour has been washed out, usually during the toning/shampoo and conditioner phase. It’s not to be confused with an actual hair colour, it’s also neither bleach nor a conditioning treatment.

I must admit… I was sceptical at first. But now, I am a complete Olaplex convert. My lived-in-colour is the lightest it’s ever been, but my locks are the softest, fullest and strongest that they’ve been in years. Don’t just take my word for it, expert colour technician Ciaran Capuano of People Hairdressing concurs.

“It’s great that you can give clients better results without damaging their hair. Olaplex is one of those products that really ‘wows’ us with what it can do. I can use it with almost every colour service—whether it’s upgrading a semi-permanent colour or adding it to a full head of bleach” explains Ciaran. Marie Uva of Uva Salon adds, “Olaplex is that magic wand that I’ve always wanted! It allows me to achieve results I have never been able to achieve in my hairdressing career.”

So, are you sold yet? Contemplating some lighter locks for spring and wondering what you should ask for in-salon? It’s so simple! All you need to do is find a salon that offers Olaplex—it can be added to any colour service. Ciaran of People Hairdressing notes that it’s as simple as upgrading a colour service. He uses Olaplex on everyone from new clients who come in for colour corrections to clients who might have locks in that of a ‘compromised condition’ or on regular clients to give their locks a little TLC.

Whatever the hair colour of your dreams, it may well be possible (with little to no damage) thanks to Olaplex. From lightened ends, platinum blonde locks or even technicolour pastel shades. Even if you’re not a colour chameleon, you too can reap the benefits of Olaplex. Olaplex No. 3 - Hair Perfector is an in-salon and take-home conditioning treatment that has been designed to strengthen the hair between chemical colour services. What’s more, it will work wonders for girls (and guys!) with virgin-locks, too. Think of it as your favourite hair-treatment or the world’s greatest conditioner, supercharged. Ciaran explains that Olaplex No. 3 “makes your hair stronger and more resilient. Even if you don’t colour your hair—everyday styling and the daily stress your hair goes through means that your hair needs to be looked after. Add Olaplex No.3 to your weekly home care for extra strength and to ensure your hair is in the best state to look it’s best all the time”.

Opting for Olaplex with your next colour service will add no more than a couple of minutes to your salon visit. Chances are, you won't even know it’s happening. It costs around the same of having an in-salon conditioning treatment but the results, oh the results, well and truly speak for themselves. What is not to love about lightened locks with zero damage?! And in case you were wondering, yes, Olaplex is basically magic.
