Who Makes The Coast's Best Pies And Sausage Rolls

Italians have pizza and pasta, the French have crepes and cheese, the Spaniards brought us tapas and paella, the Germans have sausages and sauerkraut, the Canadians are proud of poutine and beaver tails, and the Americans excel at hot dogs and bagels…

Us Aussies? Our iconic claim to fame and display of culinary prowess is the humble meat pie and sausage roll. It’s what defines us and the first thing we crave after a long stint abroad.

So when a re-heated Four‘n Twenty simply won’t do, you can’t go past our pick of the best pies and sausage rolls on the Gold Coast.

Plus, one of our faves—Surfers Paradise’s BKRY—is giving you the chance to win a month worth of pies (struth!), so be sure to enter your details at the bottom.

The newest addition to Surfers Paradise’s sleek “The 4217” complex, BKRY is already holding its own among the best pies and sausage rolls on the Gold Coast. BKRY (or bakery without the vowels, so chic!) bakes all their products with an immense amount of heart and conscious thought, using locally-sourced ingredients and donating any left-over goods at the close of business to food rescue charity, Oz Harvest. You’ll go weak at the knees for their signature creations including the pulled pork pie and vego “sausage” roll with sweet potato, walnut, caramelised onion, and feta. Nom nom nom.

Where: The 4217, 10 Beach Road, Surfers Paradise

While Nobby Beach has gone and grown all trendy and hipster, Foster’s Bakery has stayed true to its roots, operating with little fuss or fanfare out of its hole-in-the-wall bakery shopfront since 1982. Crowd favourites include the chicken and vegetable pie, lamb and rosemary pie, or the “Ned Kelly” with chunky steak, bacon, cheese, and a whole egg in the centre. Struth!

Where: 1/2227 Gold Coast Highway, Nobby Beach

Another go-to for the gourmet meat pie connoisseur, this Ferry Road Market bakery makes insanely good chunky Wagu beef pies as well as chicken and leek pies, with their beef and pork sausage rolls also very worthy of a trip to Southport. With all goods baked on premises and using only the best ingredients, we think Flour is a worthy contender among the best pies and sausage rolls on the Gold Coast.

Where: Shop T3 Ferry Road Market, Brickworks Centre, 107 Ferry Road, Southport

This Isle of Capri local’s favourite may be a café, but Urban Fix Espresso are most proud of their home-made-with-love sausage rolls, which they claim are the best on the Gold Coast. Next time you are craving a flaky roll of deliciousness, make a beeline to Urban Fix and you be the judge! And if you are anything like us and must follow savoury with a sweet treat, scoop up a caramel slice or fig and pear tart for the trip home.

Where: Via on Roma, Isle of Capri

There would be a riot among southerners if we omitted the Coolangatta Pie Shop from our round up of the best pies and sausage rolls on the Gold Coast. First opening their doors way back in 1964, they’ve been keeping local bellies content for a half century, plus pulling a marathon effort every weekend when they open non-stop from 6am on Friday to 4pm on Sunday. Our picks are the beef, bacon, and cheese pie along with their original but bloody good sausage roll. And we are here to let you know, the Cooly Pie Shop has just joined the Coast’s food on wheels cavalry, so keep your eyes peeled for their mobile pie van plying the beaches between Rainbow Bay and Currumbin, plus feeding workers mid week throughout the southern industrial areas.

Where: 50 Griffith Street, Coolangatta

Just like OZ claimed pavlova as our own (sorry NZ!), we’re claiming Yatala Pies under the wing of the Gold Coast. On the highway north, between the GC and Brisvegas, Yatala Pies have been feeding hungry locals and tourists for more than 130 years, now selling around 3,500 pies daily—that’s legendary status in every sense of the word! Deviate off the highway for famous favourites such as the good ‘ol Chunky Steak or Steak and Mushroom, or mix it up with the Lamb Coconut Curry pie. Drool.

Where: 48 Old Pacific Highway, Yatala

Tucked in the industrial backstreets of Burleigh, many have said Quinney’s make the best pies and sausage rolls on the Gold Coast, and we must agree they are up there with the best! Plus, if eating meat pies means you get rock hard abs like master pie baker Mr Quinney himself, we’ll take a six-pack please! This Gold Coast institution rocks all your traditional meat faves, or be adventurous with their Penang Chicken Curry or Butter Chicken pies.

Where: 1/32 Taree Street, Burleigh
