We’ve tried dessert degustations and excessive 12-course foodie degustations, but this, friends, is the coolest concept we’ve encountered in yonks!

When you have Adam Bastow, one of the country’s most talented bartenders steering the bar (seriously though, this humble gent is a mixology genius), you want to share a piece of him with everyone.

Which is exactly what Burleigh’s Iku Yakitori & Whisky Bar is doing every Monday night—turning it up a notch with their new cocktail degustation. That’s right, a night dedicated to some of the finest cocktails on the Coast, complemented by some moreish Japanese bites. Heck yes, we’ll drink to that and then some!

Watching Adam mix, shake and ultimately serve up stellar drinks here is like watching an artist paint and is definitive proof why he’s the cream of the Gold Coast’s cocktail crop.

Each and every week at Iku Yakitori, Adam takes on the massive challenge of creating a new cocktail list. You’ve probably sampled one or two in a dinner sitting and been intrigued by the ingredients and combinations beckoning from further down the list. Well, in that case, this event has your name allll over it.

Held (dangerously) on a school night each Monday evening, Iku Yakitori’s new cocktail degustation, hosted by the man himself, involves eight intimate seats around the back bar. Throughout the night, you’ll be treated to a captivating educational session with Adam as he explains in detail precisely what goes into crafting each masterpiece.

You’ll learn techniques like utilising farm-sourced seasonal ingredients, to creating shrubs and infusions to preserve popular fruits like berries when they’re out of season. Adam will also take you on an in depth journey through the concept of flavours; taking the core elements of alcohol, acidity and sweetness to create something outside of the norm and the resulting effect it will have on your palette and senses.

Yep, this is our kinda masterclass.

This past week, highlights included an aperitif-style cocktail featuring in-season guava that was fresh and uplifting rather than sickly sweet, and transforming a classic like Cognac (that is usually swilled straight by your grandpa), giving it an alternative life in a bright and summery tipple. Intrigued? You should be!

As you’ll be sipping your way through seven cocktail tasters in one seating, to balance out all that alcohol you’ll be served delicious edamame dip throughout the dego, with the regular menu and yakitori available to order as you please.

We know what you’re thinking. “This sounds like the perfect excuse to turn Monday night into the highlight of the week”. And you know what? You’re totally right.

Whatever you do, this is the night to put the keys away and call an Uber. And with seriously limited seats available, you’d best be picking up the phone and securing yours, stat.

Kanpai!
