Okay, so Palm Beach locals and regulars driving south on the Gold Coast Highway will know that this news is not that new anymore.
Quietly opening its doors a few weeks before Christmas, Hendrixx Espresso has been methodically building on its offerings, preparing its kitchen, and trialling menu items on its growing clientele. With final additions to the menu due to drop over the next week or so, we thought now was a great time to share this new Gold Coast café with the world.
Owner Marc is a long-time local around these parts and when the opportunity was presented to him, the retired businessman in the field of steel and civil construction happily found himself a hospitality proprietor. Recalling time spent in France as a youngster, he was inspired to recreate the feel of a laid-back brasserie, that was neither café nor restaurant, but otherwise wedged somewhere in the middle.
Hendrixx is the incredibly well thought-out and heart-warming rejuvenation of a long neglected space—the 70-year-old corner building was once a hardware store and more recently the Boardlife surf shop. When renovating, the team found a gorgeous original hardwood floor under three layers of chipboard and linoleum. The walls were stripped to reveal roughened brick walls, and low ceilings were removed, opening up the room and exposing support beams, rafters, and a rustic corrugated tin roof.
The result is an energetic hangout that will have you wanting to linger in retro couches serenaded by funky tunes. Behind the barista bar is a massive mural of the legend himself, Jimi and walls are adorned with an eclectic mix of paintings and one-off art installations, including a cheeky nude piece by famous Australian artist, Bromley.
We think they’ve done a stellar job creating a hip and welcoming space, injecting life and soul back into a once-tiring element of Palm Beach history.
Once you’re done lusting over the interior, sidle up to the cool glass tile-lined bar to order a coffee with beans sourced from boutique Brisbane roaster, Fonzie Abbot, and pair it with a fresh pastry (try the choc o pain croissant). Dishes on the all day breakfast and lunch menu are simple but totally satisfying—plus they make jaffles!!
We devoured a tasty bacon and egg jaffle with smoky tomato relish, plus a “Voodoo Dhal” (one for the vegos) filled with spiced lentils, roast pumpkin, feta, spinach, feta, and a mango chutney; all jaffles are served on sourdough by Burleigh Bakery. Light options on the menu include smoothies, fresh juices, and everyone’s favourite, a refreshing acai or pitaya bowl.
While they are still in the works, the team at Hendrixx are pretty excited about new additions to the menu coming later this month. We’ll be back to try their vegan-friendly chai breakfast puddings with layers of coconut chia, cacao chia, buckini, and berries, as well as raw food Buddha bowls loaded with nourishing goodness.
It seems there’s plenty happening in Palm Beach these days, and Hendrixx Espresso is fitting in just nicely. If you haven’t already, skip down there and check ‘em out!
Open from 6am—3pm Monday to Saturday and 6am—1pm Sundays, head to Hendrixx if you’re in the mood for bright and friendly service, light yet satisfying eats, and laid-back atmosphere, all just a sandy-footed stroll from the beach. Don’t mind if we do!
