A chilly change is well and truly making its way to the Gold Coast. And no matter how much we try and fight it by still insisting on going out for ice cream and dipping in the ocean before work, winter is coming!

Luckily for us, so are a bunch of alternative events to keep us busy (and toasty). Huge music concerts, racing and culture—it’s all happening. So, without further ado, here are the best things to do on the Gold Coast this May.  

Surfers Paradise LIVE + VIP Beach Hut Experience

Want to get in on the action of Surfers Paradise LIVE from the comfort of your very own marquee? Yep, it's happening! The all-new One Cavill Beach Hut boasts an absolute beachfront posie, a fully stocked bar and a screen so big you'll basically feel front row centre in the crowd. Relax on a bean bag, bubbles in hand and lap up your luxe experience with the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Daryl Braithwaite and Kate Ceberano serenading you from the stage. Gold Coast Music Awards—Free Concert

Dust off your air guitar, strap up those knees and floor-slide right into this year’s epic Gold Coast Music Awards. Teaming with the hype of Surfers LIVE, the GCMA will sprawl across Surfers Paradise Beach for one buzzing family-friendly and free music fest. The lineup? Mr smooth himself, Bobby Alu, funk lords Electric Lemonade, world touring Hussy Hicks and indie rockers Eliza and The Delusionals. Pick up tickets to the VIP awards ceremony tent or just join crowd with a kebab in hand, stageside.    

When: Thursday 3 May; 6pm to 10pm

Gold Coast Cup

Finally, an excuse to pretend we’re loaded. Chuck on your favourite fascinator, three-piece suit or horse costume and head down to the Gold Coast Turf Club for the newly renamed Gold Coast Cup. Flukes are our forte, so putting a couple of bucks on a winner is a given. There are all types of fancy meal packages on offer but no doubt you’ll go past a Maccas on the way home and a cheesy always fills a boozy craving. Plus, you’ll be looking glam af in the drive thru, so get a double. You’re worth it.

MayDay Sundayz Sessions At Nobby Beach Surf Club

Throw back a cold one and bring in the May Day long weekend with none other than the Nobby Beach Surf Club, who are re-launching Sunday Sessions in Albatross Park. Kick back in the beachfront locale with soothing acoustic tunes, local food trucks and entertainment for the little tackers. Then wash it all down with an old-fashioned parmy. Bloody beautiful.

Rice Paper Sissors Kitchen Takeover At Can Tho 

Can Tho Kitchen dishes up mouthwatering traditional Vietnamese meals on the reg. So, if they’re inviting anyone into their kitchen, you know they’ve got to be good. Enter: well-known Melbourne chef, Ross Magnaye. Yep, the face behind Rice Paper Scissors is making a trip up our way to serve an indulgent eight-course banquet with optional matching wines. Can Tho Kitchen  believe that no good meal can truly be enjoyed without a beverage and that’s why we know they’re our kind of people. Reserve your bowl.

In The Bin Short Film Festival

Yep, you’re going to get your full $13 worth out of your KMart picnic rug this month with yet another outdoor festivity. As one of the longest running Australian Film Festivals (17 big years!), the people who brought us the likes of Harvey Krumpet are back and they’re taking over Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Known for offering a little something for everyone, In The Bin Short Film Fest will run over five nights, offering twilight movie viewing under the stars. Bliss.

Mother’s Day

Ahh, mums. We love ‘em. So, spoil yours this Mother’s Day with one of the ample Mum-loving things to do on the Gold Coast this May. Whisk her away to The Island’s pool deck high tea with bubbles (and prove that you’re totally an adult), or to The Star for one of their many spa, food or drink packages or make your way down to QT where brunch and dinner packages at Bazaar Marketplace come with a special gift for mums. Blues On Broadbeach 

If there were ever a time it was okay to wear a fedora, it would be at the annual Blues On Broadbeach. This action-packed, 15 stage street crawl of bluesy bliss has broadened its artist scope to bring you a line up that is seriously good. Rock out to The Screaming Jets andAsh Grunwald, plus a mixed bag of local and international acts. Spanning from The Star all the way down through to Broadbeach’s streets, parklands and open-air mall, you’ll be getting down to some seriously funky beats, day and night. Pack your picnic blanket, hip flask and stomping shoes to feel the full experience of one of the grooviest things to do on the Gold Coast this May!

Murwillumbah Art Trail

Insist on taking your crew for a roadtrip across the border, but just don’t bring that guy who needs to stop for loo breaks every five minutes. Someone had to say it. Then it’s first stop, the fourth annual Murwillumbah Art Trail! This year’s edition, titled Moving On, reflects on floods in the community and how these li’l fighters have bounced back. Nestle into a comfy possie and get all goosebumpy from inspiring performances, pretend like you know what you’re doing while looking at interesting sculptures, settle in for creative films and get some serious d floor inspo from dance shows. Picking up some tasty eats is a given, a wine or two never goes astray and, of course, you’ll be wearing that artsy beret you only whip out when you want to look cultured.

Dancing On The Green At HOTA

Everyone’s always banging on about Sunday seshs, but they’re obviously forgetting that Saturdays are made for boozy arvos and good tunes too. With HOTA’s new sunset events lineup including Dancing on the Green, get grooving in their brand new amphitheatre fit with a live band, the rhythm gurus from Swing On In teaching free swing dancing lessons from 4pm and you, killing it with your mates. It’s like a night at the pub, except this time you can dance.

An Evening With Mick Fanning At The Star

Mick Fanning is basically the Ryan Gosling of the Gold Coast. There are only nice things to say about him, he’s successful as all heck, ruggedly handsome and everyone has broken into song with him while wearing tap shoes at some point. Okay, maybe not that last one. And now you have the chance to share an evening with the three-time world champion and shark wrestling survivor himself. Come and fist pump his down-to-earthness (totally a word) in Mick Fanning’s show at The Star. Yep, this is one’s a pretty unique thing to do on the Gold Coast this May.

Banff Mountain Film Festival 

Fancy yourself a bit of an adventurer? Then Banff Mountain Film Festival at HOTA is right up your alley. Rolling into town for just two nights, this world tour showcase will take you exploring some of the wildest mountain adventures known to every man and his dog (and every woman and her curious cat). A jigsaw of short films makes this cinematic adventure a completely unique addition to our roundup of things to do on the Gold Coast this May. Be mesmerised by intricate narratives, awe-worthy scenery and heart-pumping action scenes. You’ll be planning your next Bear Grylls-inspired getaway before you know it.

Gold Coast Food & Wine Festival 

Pop the champas, channel Gordon Ramsay and ‘don your cravat—the third ever Gold Coast Food and Wine Festival is back, baby! Among the 30-plus events, get down at Burleigh Brewing’s Local Flavour shindig, Mount Tamborine’s long table luncheons and NightQuarter’s BBQ and Beats showdown or, simply meander to Lionel Perry’s picnic in the park in Surfers where UberEATS will be delivering the goods. It's shaping up to be one of the biggest Gold Coast events happening this May.
