When it comes to counting up all those precious weekend calories, we’re all about maxing out at the right venues—and filling our growling stomachs with the best of Melbourne’s cocktails, meaty dishes, delicate pastries and indulgent sweets. And boy, have we found a hot-spot that knocks the ball out of the park when it comes to treating ourselves.
Food-lovers of Melbourne, have you been to the southside gem Luxembourg lately?! If not, you’re going to want to a) read on for all the drool-worthy deets, and b) clear your weekend calendar so it can be filled with these epic drinks and dishes.
First up, it’s worth knowing that Luxembourg is one of the shining stars in a group of Melbourne restaurants headed up by the genius that is Andrew McConnell. You’ve probably sunk your teeth into the lobster roll at Supernormal, or cooed over the freshly cooked madeleines at Cumulus? If the answer is ‘yes,’ you’ll already know the deliciousness that you can expect at this southside sister. But you’ll also know that each and every restaurant has it’s own thing going on—cookie-cutter cuisine? Hell no! So, what’s Luxembourg all about?
As the name suggests, the venue draws inspiration from Europe, bringing together French-style cooking, world wines, and Melbourne’s signature design cool. Which means you’ll want to order one of everything as it’s just so damn delicious. Foie gras ice-cream? Seriously, France—you deserve some sort of internatinal medal for blessing us with this.
While the food itself is second to none, the vibe is relaxed and welcoming, meaning there’s none of the stiffness associated with eating really, really delicious food and sipping on mind-blowingly delicious wine-slash-cocktails. You can just as easily drop in for some half-price oysters and a cheeky $8 Aperol spritz (which they serve up from 5pm-7pm Tuesday to Sunday), as you can sit down to the full chef’s tasting menu, which consists of a smorgasbord of epic dishes that combine the best of everything.
However, if you’re looking for a food experience that sits somewhere in the middle, it’s their brand new Sunday lunch menu that’s got us drooling on our keyboards. Knowing just how much we love a chilled-out Sunday catch-up with our nearest and dearest, Chris and the Luxembourg team have concocted a dream five-course feast that should be the centre-point of any self-respecting Melburnian’s weekend. Launching (or should that be lunching?) on Sunday 5 June, it’s one that you’re going to want to book, especially if you’re susceptible to a bad case of food #FOMO.
With slow-cooked lamb, cured duck breast, ocean trout rillettes, and poached meringues with buttermilk sorbet all on the menu, as well as matched wines for those vino aficionados (that’s everyone, right?), you’re guaranteed a cracking feed. And it’s not a one-time only affair, either: the team will be switching up the menu every week, showcasing new and exciting dishes on a weekly basis. Do I smell a new Sunday local in the works?
It’s worth noting too that Luxembourg’s Sunday lunchtime extravaganza is a helluva lot more pocket-friendly than the $300 degustations we’ve seen floating around Melbourne’s dining scene of late. For a mere $55 per head, you’ll be treated to world-class dishes made from super-fresh ingredients, all in one of Melbourne’s most beautiful southside venues.
Not satisfied with a new Sunday lunch bonanza, Luxembourg’s latest menu innovations include a special addition for you meat-lovers. The team has sourced the best steaks in the state from Fitzroy butcher, Meatsmith, and as of this coming weekend will be serving up a challenge. The only question is, will you choose a classic 350g club steak (meat level: beginner), a juicy 650g rib eye (meat level: intermediate), or a mind-blowing 900g T-bone steak (meat level: ultimate pro)? They’re all available as part of the daily menu, and come perfectly cooked, no matter how you like your meat. Carnivores, this is one you’ll want to hit up for your cravings, pronto.
Sometimes, with the flurry of new openings that pop up every week in Melbourne, it’s easy to forget the gems that have been around for a little longer than, oh, all of five minutes. But do yourself a favour by recapping on this St Kilda institution and you’ll definitely be bowled over by what you find at Luxembourg.
As for those precious weekend calories? You know what to do.
