Melbourne’s burger scene has felt, well, a little one-sided lately. If you’re not a fan of a beef patty coated in just about every condiment known to man, there isn’t much out there for you in the brioche bun-encased world. At least we thought there wasn’t. That was until we discovered the incredible seafood selection at Melbourne’s tastiest fish and chip hot-spot, Fish & Chippery By The Atlantic.

The team at Fish & Chippery, which is situated on the riverside promenade of the Crown Entertainment Complex, have taken it upon themselves to rewrite the rule book when it comes to the classic burger and fries combo. Their seafood-loving chefs have combined everything we love about freshly caught and battered fish and chips and with everything we love about burgers—bar the red meat hangover that we get directly after scoffing a double-stack.

If you haven’t yet ventured to this trend-setting eatery, there are a few things you should know before you go. The name is such a mouthful because the restaurant is run by the same team behind The Atlantic, Crown’s most prestigious seafood restaurant, and home to some of the best oysters, crab and freshly caught fish dishes in the State. Everything you’re eating is the same quality as what’s served by head chef Donovan Cooke in the swanky restaurant next door, only without the dollar price tag, or shame about covering everything with ketchup or tartare sauce! All of the seafood you’ll be ordering is super-fresh—nothing is frozen or kept on standby for a few days (because ew, yuck)—and you can have the fish grilled if you’re on a health kick, or beer battered if you’re keen for the classic seaside experience. They're also the guys behind *that* chowder everyone's drooling over.

But back to the burgers that have got us drooling over their creativity and all-round deliciousness. First on the menu is the rockling fillet burger, which combines grilled rockling with crispy Asian slaw, all topped off with a light miso yuzu dressing (is this the miso mayo hybrid we’ve been looking for our whole lives?!) and served on a black squid ink brioche bun. It’s pretty much a monochrome burger, which is probably the most Melbourne thing we’ve ever heard of. In need of a burger that matches your all-black-everything outfit *and* taste as good as it looks? This is it.

Next on the list are the incredible prawn and soft shell crab delicacies. If you dream of chomping down on all the shellfish you can handle, the crispy prawn burger coated in light breadcrumbs and served with marie rose dressing, fresh lettuce, tomato, in a brioche bun is juicy and perfectly seasoned. As for the tempura soft shell crab wrap, we’d happily eat this for lunch every day for the rest of the year. Served with a side of spicy jalapeno goma dressing, with a sprinkling of black sesame, beansprouts and wombok salad, this is one Asian-inspired dish that we will definitely be back for, time and time again.

For those of you who are trying to be good (and by ‘be good’, we mean stopping at two potato cakes instead of eight…), their salad bar is crammed full of nutritious options that deliver on flavour. And, of course, there are freshly shucked oysters served by the half-dozen and dozen, for those days when you need a little seafood luxury.

But what about the traditional fish and chip experience? We were lucky enough to try every single fish variety that’s on the menu at Fish & Chippery By The Atlantic and, while it was the rockling burger that stole the show, we literally couldn’t fault any aspect of their tasty fillets. Add a side of freshly made mushy peas and some salt and vinegar covered hot chips, and you’ve got a culinary classic that simply cannot be beaten.

Fish & Chippery By The Atlantic keeps it simple when it comes to service, letting the food speak for itself. The retro-tinged fish and chip eatery has a heated open-air dining area, which is directly opposite the Kings Way footbridge, making it the ideal spot for some fish and chips with a side of people-watching, as well as serving freshly cooked fish with all the trimmings to-go.

Whether you’re on the hunt for a tasty mid-week lunch, taking a stroll along the Crown riverwalk with your significant other, or lusting after a late-night feed as a result of a few bevvies in the city, we’re pretty sure that Fish & Chippery has a freshly caught answer that will solve your hunger problems. Move over, Easey’s, Huxtaburger, 8Bit, and all you beef-touting patty-flippers: This seafood solution has moved right to the top of our must-eat list.

Fish & Chippery By The Atlantic is open seven days a week, from 11am — 11pm. Drop in on Mondays when you can pick up their epic potato cakes for only $1!
