5 Australian Treats To Devour This Weekend

By Morgan Reardon

With the Australia Day weekend so close we can almost taste it, a bunch of our favourite eateries have created special treats to celebrate. From native ingredients to spins on old school classics, we’ve done the hard yards and found five eats you absolutely have to try.

Pad Thai Pie At Phat Elephant

Legendary Thai restaurant, Phat Elephant has merged the country’s two most prized delicacies; the classic Pad Thai with the humble Aussie meat pie. Freshly made, peanut-crusted flaky pastry is made especially for this monstrous pie and is then stuffed with their signature Pad Thai and baked to perfection, creating what is quite simply a new national treasure.

Caramel Tim Tam Margarita At El Camino Cantina

Bowen Hills

Famous for their monstrous-sized margaritas, Brisbane newbie El Camino will be slinging Tim Tam margaritas all long weekend. Combining their classic margs with caramel notes and topped with a Tim Tam straw, we’re calling alcoholic Tim tam slams the most extra Aussie tradition out there.

Bundaberg Ginger Beer Gelato From Gelatissimo

CBD, Bulimba and Chermside

Nothing says Queensland summer quite like throwing back a Bundaberg Ginger Beer on a 40-degree day. Which is why we’re drooling at the news the brew has teamed up with Gelatissimo to create a truly refreshing scoop. Made with Bundaberg Ginger Beer poured straight from the bottle, each scoop of creamy gelato has a slight fizz and that familiar ginger tang.

Free Sausage Sizzle At Little Red Providore

Red Hill

There’s nothing quite like the smoky waft of a sausage sizzle to know you’re in for a classic Australia Day. Kick your celebrations off the right way with a morning coffee and free sausage sizzle at Little Red Providore. Rock up between 7am and midday and hit up the team for a cheeky snag.

Lamington Doughnut From Paddock Bakery

Miami, Gold Coast

Because long weekends are all about indulgence and days at the beach, the wizards down at Gold Coast’s Paddock Bakery have married two of our biggest loves—doughnuts and lamingtons—to create something pretty damn iconic. With a rich strawberry jam centre and lashings of chocolate and coconut, do yourself a favour and grab a six pack. The crew at Paddock are also whipping up batches of mini sausage rolls that you can pre-order for the big day. If that’s not a winning combo we don’t know what is.
