With the Australia Day weekend so close we can almost taste it, a bunch of our favourite eateries have created special treats to celebrate. From native ingredients to spins on old school classics, we’ve done the hard yards and found five eats you absolutely have to try.
Lamington Cocktail From Social Eating House
Broadbeach
Lamingtons. They’re the humble Aussie treat that could be found in every good school lunchbox. Which is probably why you wouldn’t expect to see it on the menu at fine dining establishment, Social Eating House. Throwing caution to the wind, the talented team are giving the chocolate treat a special nod with their lamington cocktail. Made with house-spiced vanilla liquor, cold drip coffee, raspberry liquor, coconut liquor and chocolate liquor—one sip will take you right back to your childhood…sort of.
Native Waffle From Elk Espresso
Broadbeach
Embracing all things Australian this long weekend, Elk Espresso is taking its signature waffles to the next level with this latest creation that champions local ingredients. The Native Waffle features peppered rhubarb gel, wattle seed ice cream, honey thyme glossed macadamias, blackberries and white chocolate. Yep, this is one not to be missed.
Pavlova Macaron From Cubby Bakehouse
Chinderah
Ok, so we’re not about to reignite the argument of whether the pavlova originates from Australia or New Zealand, we just know we love them and that they’re an absolute must-eat this weekend. But instead of making one yourself, head to Chinderah newbie Cubby for their spin on it—mouth-watering passionfruit curd and fresh raspberries piped between two delicate macarons. No judgement if you pop a couple of these in a row.
Bundaberg Ginger Beer Gelato From Gelatissimo
Surfers Paradise and Coomera
Nothing says Queensland summer quite like throwing back a Bundaberg Ginger Beer on a 40-degree day. Which is why we’re drooling at the news the brew has teamed up with Gelatissimo to create a truly refreshing scoop. Made with Bundaberg Ginger Beer poured straight from the bottle, each scoop of the creamy gelato has a slight fizz and that familiar ginger tang.
Lamington Doughnut From Paddock Bakery
Miami
Because long weekends are all about indulgence, the wizards at Paddock Bakery have married two of our biggest loves—doughnuts and lamingtons—to create something pretty damn iconic. With a rich strawberry jam centre and lashings of chocolate and coconut, do yourself a favour and grab a six pack. The crew at Paddock are also whipping up batches of mini sausage rolls that you can pre-order for the big day. If that’s not a winning combo we don’t know what is.
