Messina Just Invented A Katsu Ice Cream Sandwich

Messina is on fire at the moment. Like even more on fire than usual (seriously). In honour of the Night Noodle Markets (kicking off tonight FYI) they’re rolling out not one, not two (or three) new desserts, but FIVE. And while we’ve so obviously got our eye on every damn thing on the menu, it’s the not-so-chicken katsu sandwich that’s really caught our eye.

They’ve dubbed it the Kamikaze Katsu Sandwich, which basically means they’ve coated a big ol’ slice of sudachi lime gelato in red velvet cake, then panko crumbs, deep fried it and drizzled it with yuzu sauce. Then they’ve sandwiched the whole lot between two slices of fluffy white bread (aka the good shit) and it actually looks like chicken katsu. Yep, this is some Heston level wizardry. While your eyes are busy being confused, your belly will be stoked.

Other winners are the O-No-Giri (green tea gelato and pistachio mousse dipped in rice bubbles and white choc), Aunty Tomsu’s Cheesecake (Japanese cheesecake, strawberry and cherry blossom cream, strawberry meringue and strawberries and cream gelato) and the I Think I’m Turning Sesame (black sesame gelato, condensed milk coffee jelly, miso crunch, banana miso bread, vanilla cream and coffee powder).

As always, bring your entire crew then try to steal a bite of their dessert.
