Sunshine, Beers, and Awesome Food | This South Side Bar Has It All

By Desta Cullen - 27 Nov 2014

How many times have you wandered through South Bank’s beautiful parklands thinking to yourself how well a cold beer and some cheese would go down?

Unbeknownst to us (and perhaps you, dear thirsty reader), South Bank is prime territory for a picnic of the beer-and-cheese variety, with three designated picnicking areas where you are legally allowed to have a tipple*.

But packing your own picnic is so last century, so we recommend letting the experts handle the catering, beer included! South Bank’s hippest bar, Tomahawk Kitchen & Bar, can furnish such an outdoor feast, with their brand new picnic basket offering.

Tomahawk has been serving up a mean craft beer and American bar meal to southsiders for just over six months now, but this new addition to their menu—a pre-packed cheese and meat board for two with takeaway beer—has won our hearts.

Everybody say charcuterie!

On top of the picnic packs, many of Tomahawk’s other menu items are available takeaway, so if you have a master brewer’s-type hunger, or happen to be feeding more than two, then feel free to add in something like a grain salad, soft baked pretzel, or fish taco.

Now for the beer. There are three options to choose from in terms of vessel: A parkland friendly Tomahawk Tallie*, Growler or BYO Growler/Squealer. Then pick your brew of choice from the designated takeaway taps.

How much you pay depends on the beer, but if you happen to buy a Growler (which can be re-used at most of Brisbane’s craft beer bars and breweries), it’s $15 plus the fill-of-beer cost. [Ed Note: The takeaway options are indicated in Tomahawks tap list and published to Facebook and their website each day, so you can plan ahead.]

All that’s left to do is pick a spot, so check this map for acceptable drinking areas, and get picnicking.

Tomahawk Kitchen & Bar is open midday to 10pm from Wednesday to Sunday.

* 740mL plastic bottle. Note that glass is not allowed in the parklands.

*A substantial meal has to be consumed while drinking. Areas are licensed until 8pm.
