West End has dominated the Brisbane cafe scene for quite a few years now, yet, slowly, things seem to be expanding. Great coffee, delicious food and cool bars aren’t just confined to the main drag of Boundary Street anymore, guys, things are getting loco and new cafes and bars are popping up outside these well-known areas.
One very cool spot leading the charge in the Southside’s cafe scene, is Two Trees, sitting pretty on Merivale Street after moving from its previous Vulture Street location. Its super-slick interior appeals to your inner minimalist and Nordic-design nerd, with dark wooden floors, crisp white walls and paneling and a large earthy, wooden communal table in the middle. Brown bottles and an assortment of essential hipster paraphernalia dot the room, making it a warm, welcoming space. In fact, everything from the ground up has been designed, developed or made by co-owner Jordan Lomas and his friends.
So, what are these guys all about? What’s their jam? Unlike a lot of cafes, these guys have gone niche, devising an absolutely delicious range of sandwiches and salads made from fresh, local ingredients. It’s a refreshing change to visit a cafe and know they’re committed to making a small menu and doing it really well.
Say goodbye to the sad looking egg and lettuce sandwich you made yourself at home this morning and, instead, say hello to Two Trees’ impressive, yet simple, menu. I once heard Gary on Masterchef say, “people eat with their eyes first”, and if that’s true, prepare to feast your eyes at Two Trees, because their plating makes even the humble sandwich look mighty fine. You won’t find any boring sandwiches up in here, we’re talking hearty rolls jam-packed with flavour instead.
Sandwiches are prepared on fresh, golden, crusty loaves from local business Sprout Artisan Bakery, then topped with produce sourced locally from markets and surrounding businesses. Using the very best quality ingredients available, all food is prepared on-site to create the seasonal menu.
Lunch sandwich options include a deliciously juicy pulled pork with smokey sauce, mayo and slaw and a tender Jerk Chicken, bursting with flavour, topped with pineapple, mint and chilli salsa, lime aioli and slaw. For veggie lovers, try the grilled tempeh with house relish, arugula and hummus.
For those in the mood for something a little lighter, but just as tasty, try one of the incredible salad bowls, including quinoa, soft herbs, grapes, pepitas and whipped ricotta or cabbage, baby beets, green beans, walnuts and dijon.
If you’re looking for a simple and tasty breakfast, try the breakfast sandwich of bacon, egg, arugula and HP Sauce. For something less filing, tuck into the spiced toasted muesli with Maleny Dairies Yoghurt, Hood Honey and berries or the very enticing avo on toast with rocket, chilli, and burnt lime.
Aside from great food, Two Trees also serve fantastic coffee including filtered and cold brew. If you’re after a real treat, try getting stuck into one of their dreamy hot or iced chocolates, made on Mörk 70% dark chocolate and coconut blossom sugar.
Two Trees is expanding soon, by adding a vibin’ bar space above the cafe that’s set to open in March and will surely bring out the local after-work crowd. I can picture it now, guys; ice-cold beers, pulled-pork sandwiches… it’s going to be amazing.
The team at Two Trees have really nailed it, setting up a cool, comfortable space and serving really delicious sandwiches and great coffee. It’s the perfect place to grab coffee and food with friends or just chill out solo with a book or have a hardcore wi-fi sesh. So, head on down and check out this great South Brisbane space, pronto!
