We’ve teamed up with Peroni to bring you our What’s Trending hit list: your monthly guide to maximising life in the city. We’re cutting through the chatter and counting down our top 10 hottest new openings, events, and trending happenings in Melbourne this month, so you won't miss a thing.
If your Instagram is one long stream of ridiculous milkshakes, good-looking people having a ball at parties you weren’t invited to, and jealousy-inducing meals at Brisbane’s best restaurants, you need this list in your life. Because we know you’re all about staying ahead of the curve, the trend, and the hashtag, here’s everywhere you should be going and everything you should be Instagramming in Brisbane this month. Get busy!
#1 South Brisbane’s Gauge Opens For Dinner
Brisbane eatery Gauge has steadily impressed patrons since opening its doors earlier this year, and now, praise the foodie gods, Gauge is leaving those doors open for dinner service. A focus on Australian produce—expect native ingredients and artisanal produce made in-house—and a highly experimental menu have cemented this Brisbane restaurant as a leader in its field. Expect to be blown away.
#2 New Pub The Hope & Anchor Is Setting Sail in Paddington
Godfather of Brisbane’s bar and restaurant scene, Jamie Webb is a man whose influence has taken Brisbane’s after-dark offerings to a new level—he’s the mastermind behind some of our favourite Brisbane venues, including Lefty’s, Sonny’s House of Blues, and Gordita. Unsurprisingly, news of a new Webb venue in Paddington has caused Brisbane to sit up and take notice. Hope & Anchor is set to open in the space formerly home to The Lark, and if Webb’s previous prowess in creating a venue with personality and contemporary cool are anything to go by we can expect big things from this nautical newbie. Stay tuned for more details.
#3 Brisbane Festival Comes To Town
Highlight of the Brisbane social calendar and cultural dynamo of every type of theatrical spectacle you could imagine, the Brisbane Festival is cresting on the horizon and we couldn’t be more excited than if you told us Alex Pettyfer had baked us a pie. With circus performances, opera, dance and the furor of Riverfire, the Brisbane Festival is undoubtedly where it’s at this September.
#4 London Fields Gastro Pub Opens
It’s not often a pub makes it into our list of best new food experiences in Brisbane, but London Fields, the latest venture by the team behind Coppa Spuntino and Red Hook, is a beautiful addition to Brisbane’s dining scene. Tucked into a pristine white washed space in West End, London Field’s menu is celebration of fresh, seasonal produce and full of simple yet creative dishes that hit the mark. The roasted bone marrow with thyme and onion was a stand out, especially when spread on crunchy baguette and shared among friends. And if you can squeeze it in, the olive oil cake with lemon and whipped ricotta is a real treat.
#5 Watt Re-Launches with New Farmer’s Kitchen
Dining by the water is a novelty in Brisbane, so the arrival of new restaurant New Farmer’s Kitchen—a beautiful new venue in the recently re-opened Watt, New Farm—is a treat for Brisbane’s foodies. Epic river views and paddock-to-plate dining that brings the outside in make this a new Brisbane restaurant well worth a visit.
#6 Get Scoop Happy at Nom Nom Gelato
Nom by name, nom by nature, Nom Nom Gelato is the coolest scoop to be seen slurping this spring, pun intended. Traditional and contemporary flavour combinations sit side by side, like peach and donut, begging to be blended into a gelato abomination that just might break the Internet.
#7 Spring Means Long Lunches at The Palms Bar and Grill
The imminent return of Brisbane’s perfect spring weather has us lusting after newcomer, The Palms, whose alfresco aspect is Mediterranean style dining at its best. Small and larger plates designed for sharing are loaded with Euro-chic favourites. Pea and mint risotto; braised lamb shoulder; rigatoni with pork and fennel sausage; it’s all good here. Finish the meal with a classic affogato, because you’re so European. Snap a pic of you and your amici enjoying a meal in the sunshine at this beautiful Brisbane restaurant and watch the likes roll on in.
#8 Pop Into Les Bubbles!
Brisbane’s foodies are chomping at the bit right about now with news that Damian Griffiths’ new venue, Parisian steakhouse Les Bubbles will be opening its doors from September 10th. Housed in the space formerly occupied by an illegal casino, don’t expect haughty French cuisine from this new Brisbane eatery. Les Bubbles is a relaxed bistro and will be dishing up comforting French favourites—the hero dish here is the steak and frites—with the same cool, casual charm we’ve come to expect from Griffiths’ venues. (Word to the wise: the frites are rumoured to be all-you-can-eat. Tres bon.) Once you’ve had your fill of French fare, traipse downstairs and explore the bar, Bubbles Bath-House, complete with spa.
#9 Barcadia Kitchen + Bar Opens in Bulimba
A neighbourhood kitchen and bar that’s crying out for long lunches in the sunshine with your favourite people, new Bulimba restaurant Barcadia may not have been open long but it’s already impressing, boasting a menu stuffed with quality ingredients and effortless casual eats, ideal for pairing with a cold beer. Highlights of the menu include the gnocchi fritto with smoked pancetta and mozzarella, and coffee and gin cured Hiramasa kingfish with juniper snow. You’ll also be tempted by the chocolate hazelnut gianduja with Italian meringue and praline semifreddo, because dessert stomachs are real.
#10 Pizzantica to Open Pizzantica Pizzeria in Bulimba
The darling of Brisbane’s pizza scene, Brisbane food truck Pizzantica has completely won us over with their mobile pizza offering (their Nutella smothered pizza holds a special place in our hearts) so to say we’re excited for the launch of their new authentico Italian pizzeria in Bulimba this coming October is an understatement of grand proportions. Pizzantica Pizzeria is touted as continuing the same effortless Italian style the van delivers, promising a truly exceptional pizza experience.
