9 Food Events for Your August Calendar

It’s officially that time of year—the time when you’re a little (actually, a lot) over the cold weather. The charm of wearing your new winter coat and cute knitted beanie has well and truly faded, as has any hint of last summer’s tan lines. In fact (and this might just be our plummeting vitamin D levels talking) this season can kiss our frozen butts! Do you know how hard it is to type the words A-U-G-U-S-T and C-A-L-E-N-D-A-R with numb hands? Those picture perfect people on the Mac ads definitely oversell the idea of typing away while the grave profusion of winter closes in around us. This is definitely how George R. R. Martin felt when he cam up with Winterfell.

Grumpy as we all are, here are a few reasons to cheer up and eat out, including a festival dedicated to meat and one of Merivale’s famous wine dinners.

Alpha Restaurant Presents: A Beer Odyssey

Beer with dinner? Why yes, thank you! Alpha Restaurant has taken humble hops to new levels with four ale-infused courses of Modern Greek food accompanied by some fresh and fancy classic Greek beers for $79. The event will be hosted by beer diva Kirrily Waldhorn and will take place on August 15. Call 9098 1111 or email and have your drachmas ready!

Diggin’ for Diamonds with Black Star Pastry and Straight to the Source

We all know and love that special weekend every August when Black Star Pastry jumps on the truffle bandwagon with an array of truffle-ey sweets. This year they’ve teamed up with foodie tour gurus Straight to the Source for a truffle-themed day out in the NSW Southern Highlands. The tour will take place on August 1, departing from Black Star’s Rosebery cafe and heading to Yelverton Truffles near Bowral for a day full of truffle hunting, cooking demonstrations, grower talks and a catered lunch with matching wines. Tickets are $325 and can be booked at

Jonah’s Sunset Dinners

Nothing beats away the winter blues better than a glass of champers overlooking stunning Whale Beach on Sydney’s northern coastline. During August you can score a two-course meal at Jonah's plus a glass of sparkling and canapé on arrival for $89. Call 9974 5579 for bookings. Available Monday through Friday.

Camp Quality’s ‘Dine at Mine’

Camp Quality is a popular charity reaching out to children’s living with cancer and this August their ‘Dine at Mine’ campaign is back for a third year running.  The event encourages budding masterchefs to pop on their aprons and host their own dinner party (or breakfast… or brunch) to support children and families affected by cancer. The idea is simple: invite your deep-pocketed friends, family and neighbours over for a meal and ask them to make a donation online when they’ve finished eating. From backyard barbeques to pizza parties, anything goes. Register and find out more at

The Animal presents Meat Fair at Newtown Hotel

Back for a second year running, the annual meat fair at Newtown Hotel will celebrate local producers and craft brewers from across the country. This year’s carnivorous delights will include more than ten different meats, including The Animal’s famous coal roasted lamb, succulent spit roasted pork and even kangaroo fillets. Wash it all down with a pint of Young Henrys, Lazy Yak or Ruby Tuesday amongst others.  No bookings required… Just rock up and be prepared to eat meat as you meander through Newtown Hotel.

Exclusive Vinteloper Dinner at BahBQ

This winemaker dinner hosted by Vinteloper’s David Bowley will take guests on a vino-themed journey accompanied by an array of traditional Brazilian churrasco and a live acoustic performance. Priced at $90 per person, the evening will include a winter cocktail and canapés on arrival, all you can eat BahBQ churrasco and seven (seven!) Vinteloper wines served throughout dinner. Call Christiane Rubin on 0450 469 162 or email to book.

Villa Maria Winemaker Dinner at Papi Chulo

It wouldn’t be winter without a fabulous Merivale event to cheer us all up! Tuesday, August 4 will see Papi Chulo’s head chefs Patrick Friesen and Christopher Hogarth team up with Villa Maria’s excellent winemaker, Josh Hammond, to bring you a night not to be missed. Guests can enjoy a six-course banquet of signature Papi Chulo dishes matched with a curated collection of Villa Maria wines. Tickets are $90 per person and include a complimentary bottle of wine to take home. Bookings via

Truffle Festival

Because we’ve gone slightly truffle crazy here at Urban List we thought you might want to head down to Canberra for an entire festival devoted to truffles. The aptly named Truffle Festival takes place across the entire region with events ranging from degustation dinners, truffle specials at participating cafes, cooking classes and demonstrations, wine tastings, truffle hunts, and farmers’ markets with a heavy truffle skew. This is a great excuse to try the best local truffled from the Canberra region and chow down on some great food while you’re at it. Visit to find out more.

I AM Present: Yoga and Healthy Eating Workshop

If you’re after a bit of balance amid all the eating, drinking, and truffle sporting you might want to check out Barefoot Yoga’s I AM Present workshop in yoga, mindfulness and healthy eating. The three hour session will take place on Saturday, August 15 and costs $60. It’s suitable for all levels and styles of yoga and the only requirement is an open mind! Visit to book.
