No doubt you’ve visited this institutional North Bondi café in your time on earth, and sang its praises as you devour a triple stack of pancakes, or got all clean with their poached eggs on sourdough, but when lunchtime beckons, Speedo’s Cafe is the place to be.
Don’t you love it when a menu covers all of your bases? You know, something healthy, something hearty, something sinful and something easy. That’s simply the name of the game at Speedo’s, there’s something for everyone: the bulker, the clean eater, the lingering luncher and the in-and-out diner.
For seafood lovers, it’s got to be the seared salmon fillet. Perfectly pink in the middle with crispy skin to boot, it’s served with brown rice, zucchini noodles and smashed orange vegetables. It’s a delicious winter warming lunch that won’t give you food regret or leave you in an afternoon slump.
If you’re keen on some red meat, the impossibly soft and moreish pulled lamb fillet will have you singing the chef’s praises for weeks. It’s served with freekeh, quinoa, smoked almonds, green peas, pomegranate and labneh is the ultimate winter warmer.
Before you ask, yes there is wine and no you don’t need to be ashamed of making this Bondi lunch a boozy one. In fact, few things go together like a crisp bottle of white and Speedo’s soft shell crab salad with shaved carrot, zucchini, fennel and pickle liquor dressing (don’t ask, just go with it—you will love it).
If you’re after something a bit less clean and a little more on the hearty side, there are plenty of beachside classics to sink your teeth into. Of course, there’s the obligatory beer battered barramundi with fat, crunchy chips, and an incredibly ‘grammable reuben sandwich with brisket, sauerkraut, gruyere cheese, and all the trimmings that bring this crunchy monster to life.
Don’t despair, sweet tooths, Speedo’s Café have jumped on the CocoWhip bandwagon, and that bad boy is getting a workout. Made from coconut water and tummy-friendly probiotics, it’s a wonderfully guilt-free alternative to sugar-laden frozen yoghurt… And it’s 100% vegan. Top it with crunchy granola, cacao nibs and fresh fruit for the ultimate lunchtime treat.
Not keen on the clean? I like your style. Weekends are a veritable treasure trove of cronuts, with wonderfully outrageous toppings. Think creamy cookie icing with chunky Oreo crumbs, and chocolatey frosting laden with Maltesers.
If that hasn’t convinced you, the sea breeze and stunning view will have you forgetting all of your troubles as you while away an afternoon with a bottle of wine and a delicious feed by the beach.
