It's that time of year again when our beautiful city comes alive with glistening lights and our historic buildings are engulfed with projections of wild animals, musical instruments and, well, robots. Welcome, Vivid Sydney 2014.
This year's program is nothing short of spectacular and there is so much to see and do, so we've picked our favourites of the festival to help you create your own hit list.
Lighting of the Sails
Created by Britain's award-winning 59 Productions, the iconic sails of the Sydney Opera House will showcase a dramatic film through time (think Adam and Eve to Kim and Kanye!).
When: 23 May – 9 June; 6pm till 12am
Gamma World MCA Original Façade
A 3D extravaganza, Gamma World at the MCA will see the building morph, change its skin and even transform its structure through the use of playful visual effects—lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
When: 23 May – 09 June; 6pm till 12am
One of Vivid's biggest-ticket events, Vivid Aquatique is set to transform Darling Harbour with gigantic dancing water jets, extravagant water screens, coloured lasers and marine fireworks. So, y'know, low key.
When: 23 May – 09 June; hourly shows from 6pm till 11pm
The Vivid Night Markets
Stroll around The Rocks and fill up on delicious morsels from the abundance of excellent market stalls. Because we all know walking is really only worth it if there's something delicious at the end.
When: 23 May - 8 June; 12pm till 11:45pm
To celebrate Vivid 2014, The Argyle is combining awesome DJ sets with incredible visual displays—get down for Phil Hudson, Yogi, The Owl, Tom Chivalry Dance, Tikki Tembo and many more!
When: 5 June – 8 June; 5pm till 3am
Modulations Wild Porteño
Because we love a good party—Sydney favourites, Porteño is hosting a long weekend fiesta at Carriageworks replete with rockabilly music and sizzling barbecued meats. BBQ and beats? We're there.
When: 6 June – 9 June; details here
What's that? You just want to sit and look at the lights with a drink in your hand? We hear you. For the best light viewing and cocktail drinking, hit up Opera Bar and Café Sydney at Circular Quay, The Bar at the End of the Wharf at Sydney Theatre Company or Blu Bar on 36 for the best vistas across the city.
