Turn into the little alleyway that is Tank Stream Way, and you’ll be faced with street artist, Lister. Not literally (sorry to get your hopes up), but the graffiti face he’s painted opens up the door to Taylor’s, AKA your rooftop drinking dreams. When both eyes are open, you know you’re on your way up.
Heading up the stairs at this new Sydney bar, you’ll work up a bit of an appetite, but there’s plenty more of Lister’s amazing artwork to stop and admire along the way. It bleeds all the way up into both levels of the bar, so you’ll have plenty to talk about even once you’ve found a cushy booth downstairs or spot on the rooftop couches.
You’ve probably justified a beer and a bite with that short amount of exercise (hey, you’ve earned it). With a new chef who has cut her teeth at Opera Bar and The Morrison, the food at Taylor’s is going to be stellar. For now, the small bar menu keeps it simple and will evolve along with the botanical cocktail list. Our suggestion? If you love a dish, cast a vote with your munchies to keep it on the menu. Love the unashamed kransky dog, with just the right amount of tangy mustard and soft melty cheese? Come back and have it for lunch too.
You don’t want to miss one of the cocktails, especially since Taylor’s have brought in mixing talent from Sky Terrace. You could go for any of the classics, but right now we’re keen on the Apple Spiced, which is a warming blend of cinnamon, apple and spiced scotch—a perfect accompaniment to defrosting under the rooftop heating.
If beer or wine is more your thing, you’re in luck. There is a great range of both local and international names, which should keep you happy. Taylor’s also happens to be the first bar in the CBD to serve Carlton unpasteurised—you can’t miss the giant copper keg!
Once you’re settled in, the tunes from ETCETC and the gorgeous green wall will really help you unwind. You feel like you’re right at home in someone’s backyard, except in this particular backyard you can see twinkling skyscrapers around you and glimpses of the Harbour Bridge through the windows. Make a diary note to come in on Wednesday evenings from 8pm, where you can check out local and up-and-coming talent.
Get in to this new Sydney bar before the crowds do, Listers (and yes, that pun was intended)!
