We've Found The Best Soups On The Coast

By Chevaune Hindley - 22 May 2016

Winter is coming. And we don’t mean in the vague and foreboding, Game of Thrones kinda way. Like it’s actually getting chilly! We get to wear socks and everything.

It also means we can stop with the salads already and start tucking into some seriously wholesome comfort food. And what better than a delicious, hearty soup to warm you from the inside out?

So while you’ve been digging out your mouldy boots and jackets from the back of the closet, we’ve been on the job to bring you the best soups on the Sunshine Coast. And here they are:

BEEF NOODLE SOUP PHO | MOOM ASIAN

If we know one thing for sure, the Vietnamese know their pho. (To save any future embarrassment, that’s pronounced FUH. Rhymes with HUH.) Anyway, Vietnamese people have pho for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And why the hell not? It’s fresh, delicious, and super healthy. Moom Asian follow the South Vietnamese way of making beef noodle pho, slow cooking the beef bones for 12 hours to the desired sweetness and following through to ensure it’s tasty, filling, and with a strong herbal flavour.

MIDDLE EASTERN CAULIFLOWER AND CORIANDER SOUP | HOMEGROWN CAFE

Venture to Palmwoods and you’ll not be disappointed by this little gem of a spot. Homegrown Cafe only source fresh local produce, change their menu seasonally, and have a beautiful garden-setting to warm your face in the sun on a cool winter’s day. Right now, they’re serving up a beautiful Middle Eastern cauliflower and coriander soup, served with fresh chilli flakes and burnt butter. With fresh bread baked in-house daily, we’ve no doubt you’ll be putting this up there with the best soups on the Sunshine Coast.

COCONUT SOUP OF SALMON | SPIRIT HOUSE

We can always trust in the Spirit House not to disappoint. They’re not only King of Flavour here on the Sunshine Coast, but they also love to create an unforgettable dining experience. And that’s why they serve their soup in a teapot. Yep, a teapot. Flavour AND fun. Their Coconut Soup of Salmon is a coconut lemongrass galangal soup (served in a teapot), which is poured at the table, over house-smoked salmon, chilli, and Thai micro herbs. Oh my!

TOMATO, RED LENTIL, AND CORIANDER SOUP | MONICAS CAFE AND DINING

If you’re fighting the cold and need a little Vitamin C boost, this one’s for you. Putting one over the somewhat boring, classic tomato soup, the chic and cosy Monicas Cafe in Maleny is cooking up a tomato, red lentil, and fresh coriander soup, served with garlic ciabatta on the side. *Ding ding* we have a winner! This gal’s been on the menu for a whole 13 years now—so you know it’s gotta be good and wholesome! During the colder weather they also offer up a second soup on the specials board— right now it’s rocking a French onion soup with Gruyere cheese croutons. Yummm! Open daily for brekkie and lunch, we suggest you rug up with scarf and boots and march your way up there pronto.

ORGANIC BONE BROTH | CK WHOLEFOODS

While we’re on the “eat healthy bandwagon”—here’s another kick-ass immunity booster for you. CK Wholefoods are cooking up an amazing and protein-rich organic bone broth, served with sautéed mushrooms, spinach, kale, a poached egg and slice of organic toast. (There’s even the option to upgrade your egg to organic.) Wowser! The organic bones are sourced locally from Kunara, and slowly cooked for an entire TWO days, ensuring every last nutrient is added to the broth, along with extra-seasoned vegetables. If you don’t have time to sit, they also offer small or medium take-away cups.

SEAFOOD CHOWDER WITH SAUTÉED SCALLOPS | YABBI’S ON THE ESPLANADE

Ah, the seafood chowder. With a long history of affairs with both European and American seafarers, this creamy soup was once subject to a law introduced in Maine in 1939, stating it a statutory offence to put tomatoes into chowder. Yabbi’s on the Esplanade have a great reputation when it comes to seafood, and they’re sticking to Maine’s law, preparing their chowder with a secret ingredient to give it that extra bit of rich creaminess. Influenced by their travels to America, the owners have recently updated their recipe to include clams as the star ingredient, along with white fish and salmon. They serve this beauty with sautéed scallops and toasted ciabatta.
It’s no surprise that it’s their most popular lunchtime dish and up with the best soups on the Sunshine Coast.

WICKED ROAST PUMPKIN SOUP | VANILLA FOOD

Like chocolate cake, gin and tonic, and cats on Instagram, some things are just meant to be together. Pumpkin in soup is definitely one of those things. Vanilla Food, located in the Belmondos Organic Market, boasts a Wicked Roast Pumpkin Soup. Not just your average pumpkin soup, this puppy is spiced up with chilli and rosemary, and is understandably rated as one of the best soups on the Sunshine Coast.
