13 Awesome Things To Do This Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend

By Grace Evans
8th Jun 2017

Isn’t the queen just the best? She has a birthday and we all get a day off work. Seems like a pretty sweet deal. Even better, this Queens Bday Long Weekend is jam-packed with great art, beer, music and WORLD GIN DAY. There’s high teas, dachshund races, gin massages and heaps more. Heads up though, you might need to escape the CBD to enjoy some of these goodies. Time to fire up the old road-trip-mobile...

Once again we’ve got your list of things to do this weekend in Melbourne (and not so Melbourne...) Enjoy!

All Weekend

Port Fairy Winter Weekends

Get the gang and your mum’s land cruiser together, because Port Fairy is calling your name. Everyone’s favourite tiny town is kicking off its Winter Weekends series with a bunch of events, including design pop up shops, antique roadshows, the annual Dachshund Dash (must be seen to be believed) and plenty of live music. Just to reiterate – they’re holding an actual sausage dog race. Only in Port Fairy right? Grab your coats, bulk buy the Doritos and set off west for the ultimate winter road trip.

Where: Several venues, Port Fairy
: 5.45 pm Friday June 9, 8am Saturday June 10, 9am Sunday June 11

Mt Baw Baw Season Launch

It’s that time of the year again. Pull out the beanies and lamb’s wool socks—the snow season has arrived.  Mt Baw Baw is changing the pace this year with their epic family fun launch. There’ll be plenty of live entertainment, DJ’s, fireworks and a heap of giveaways (yes that means free stuff). You don’t have to be a seasoned Black Run pro to enjoy a free sausage sizzle and tobogganing, so don’t be shy. Go throw a snowball this long weekend.

MONA Museum of Everything

Okay, this one’s not technically in Melbourne. But it’s so cool we just had to include it (and Hobart is only a cheeky 50-minute flight away after all...). The Museum of Everything is landing at MONA, and it’s opening its doors for the first time on 10 June. If you haven’t heard of The Museum of Everything, it’s a ‘wandering exhibit’ featuring some of the world’s best untrained, unintentional and undiscovered artists. In their first ever Australian visit, The Museum of Everything will be transforming the walls of MONA and blowing our minds with their unexpected discoveries. Disclaimer: Tassie is never warm, so pack your thermals

Where: MONA Museum, Hobart
: 12pm Saturday June 10 & 11

Queen’s High Tea

There’s no better way to honour “her Maj” than with an old-fashioned high tea. Sipping Earl Grey over a decadent plate of scones jam and cream will have you feeling in royal in no time. Mary Eats Cake is inviting you to join them for a weekend filled with unique tea blends and freshly-baked sweets goodies, all paired with traditional tea ware of course. Grab your fancy-smchancy coat and go stuff your face. It’s cultured, so it can’t be bad for you.

Where: Mary Eats Cake, 558 Sydney Road, Brunswick
: 11am or 2.30pm Saturday June 10 & 11

Winter Wines At The Press Club

Want to try some of the rarest wines in the world? The Press Club somehow got their hands on several incredibly scarce vintages, and they’re giving you the chance to taste them by the glass. This weekend you can expect to see Jérôme Prévost ‘La Closerie Les Béguines’ LC12 Gueux Champagne on the menu. Now you have to be a pretty hardcore oenophile to actually know what that means, but for the laypeople out there, it’s one of the rarest wines in the world. Only 240 bottles were ever made. Serious stuff.

VB Slushies

On the other end of the boozy spectrum, we have this. Yep you read correctly—VB slushies are now a thing. There really is nothing better than hearing the cap twist off an ice-cold VB. Supersmall Club are revolutionizing our ol’ faithful and pairing it with the icy goodness of a slushy. It’s all happening inside the warmth of their South Yarra venue, so you can sip away your troubles while feeling like a giant kid (...a giant kid drinking VB...hmm)

Welcome to Thornbury are throwing an American Double Denim Block Party, and if you rock up in DD threads you’ll instantly be rewarded a free pint of American Goode IPA. How good is that? Along with questionable fashion choices comes excellent food. That’s why Fancy Hanks, Miss Katie’s Crab Shack and Sparrow’s Philly Cheesesteaks will be on hand, dishing out rib-sticking American fare.

Gin Martini Massages At Gin Palace

The second Gin Palace event you need to etch into your diaries and tattoo on your brain is the Plymouth Gin Martini Massages. Let us clarify. You’re not actually rubbed down WITH gin (although that sounds kind of interesting...let’s delve into that another time). Basically, Gin Palace will mix you the ultimate Plymouth martini (dirty, straight up, however you like it) and you get to drink it while being massaged by lithe and sinewy people in the purpose-built ‘Harem’. Sounds like something that’s two drinks away from a B-Grade porno, but who cares—we’re there.

We’re talking canapés of mini bratwurst, lamb skewers, pulled pork buns...there’s even talk of Sausage Station. That’s what we’re talking about! Their delish array of artery-clogging goodness will be followed by a selection of drinks, including sparkling whites and random German beers we can’t pronounce. Lasst uns party machen (let’s party).

The Queen, in all her royal glory, has decided to celebrate her bday by throwing a massive street party in St Kilda. What an absolute champ. She’s also given you Monday off work (to fight off the hangover) so there’s no reason not to get your butt to the Queen’s Birthday Street Party this weekend. Fitzroy Street will be transformed into a glamorous gala with live circus performers, fire twirlers, musicians and a special appearance from “the queen” (impersonator) herself. Of course there’ll be plenty of food and drink to keep you going too.

This long weekend you can expect local duo, Jane & Lisa, to keep you chilled with their soulful harmonies.
