Looking for fun things to do in Melbourne this summer? If your answer is, youbetcha!, then why not spend an evening hanging out amongst the wildlife, watching some world-class musicians and raising money to help save endangered species at Zoo Twilights. With twelve events to choose from, we have whittled down the top five Zoo Twilights gigs that you can still purchase tickets for.
Dan Sultan, Friday 13th February
Local hero country rock singer-songwriter Dan Sultan joins Zoo Twilights fresh from his Best Rock Album win at the 2014 ARIA Music Awards. He’ll be joined by Benny Walker, another Victorian who counts soul, blues, reggae and folk among his repertoire of styles—perfect for chilling out at the end of a busy week.
Spiderbait, Saturday 21st February
Claiming a well-deserved place in Australian indie royalty, energetic three-piece Spiderbait will be playing hits from throughout their career, supported by Melbourne talent, Jen Cloher. Expect a career-spanning set from the headline act that includes nostalgic nineties favourites as well as tracks from the group’s latest album. Snap up a ticket now and get ready to rock out like you’re an extra in that nightclub scene from 10 Things I Hate About You.
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Friday 27th February
Do you like your lo-fi indie rock with a healthy dose of earworm hooks and sing-along choruses? American artist Stephen Malkmus—previously the lead singer and guitarist of Pavement—performs with his current band, the Jicks, at the end of February. He will be joined by Twerps, an infectious Melbourne act who are currently making waves in music circles worldwide. Catch them alongside their hero before they blow up.
Conor Oberst, Saturday 28th February
Heralded—albeit somewhat lazily—as the Dylan of his generation, Omaha native Conor Oberst (previously known by the moniker Bright Eyes) brings his unique blend of heart-on-sleeve song writing and endearing folk melodies all the way to Melbourne for Zoo Twilights. Do: Bring a packet of tissues and a loved one. Don’t: Tell him to cheer up.
The Village People, Friday 6th March
Saving the best until last, Zoo Twilights’ penultimate show is headlined by disco veterans The Village People. Don your lycra, sequins, leathers, policeman uniform and any other glad-rags and get ready to ‘YMCA’ your way into the weekend!
Each Zoo Twilights ticket includes entry to the zoo a full 90 minutes before performances, giving you plenty of time to take in the animal sights before getting your musical fix. Tickets can be booked via the Melbourne Zoo website.
