Not only will you find mouth-watering options on the all-day menu like the Buttermilk Vanilla Pancakes and Spanish Baked Eggs, but the display cabinet offers a yummy selection of sandwiches and baguettes together with a great offering of cured meats, fine cheeses and local olives. The wall-lined shelves are adorned with Larsen & Thompson teas, specialty Pangkarra pastas, an assortment of Yarra Valley relishes, dressings, olive oil…and lots more! Alimentari | Fitzroy & Collingwood
Now at two great north-side locations, Alimentari is more popular than ever and deserves a shiny spot on our list of Melbourne's best café delis. Head to Brunswick Street Alimentari and your only concern will be what to pile onto your plate first. The extensive Italian menu features everything from a traditional Italian worker's brekkie with egg, salami, tomato, olives and buffalo mozzarella (our five!), to a plethora of paninis, sandwiches and wraps for lunch. The deli cabinet is rich with wonderful cheeses and charcuterie, and 'pronto' take-home meals, which means you can pre-order your din-dins and pick it up for the heating. How does pork and fennel lasagna sound? Or Veal involtini? Mmmmm.
Drop into Smith Street Alimentari and pick up some freshly made pasta. Not only is it incredibly tasty but it hardly takes any time to cook. If meat is more your style, you definitely need to try their free-range organic chicken, which comes straight from the rotisserie. Ah-maze.
Bezela Foodstore | Carlton
Flexibility and free-range is the name of the game at Bezela Foodstore in Carlton. These cool cats love creating new things and they take requests too, so if you're after a particular winter warmer, just let them know and you might just find it up for the taking. Visit for the ever-changing daily menu or pop online to check out their blog. There's a great selection of soups, casseroles and all your fave salads, and the deli is overflowing with a handpicked selection of free-range small goods, cheese and antipasto.
